What is AT&T like in the South? (specifically GA)

So I'm currently on T-Mobile with a Nexus One, which I have been spoiled with updates as soon as they are released (<3 Google). But my contract is up in February and I don't want to stay with T-Mobile, not the best network for where I live (Atlanta-metro area, Georgia).

I want to know what AT&T is like in GA. The reason I'm being region specific, is that when I went to Vegas in 2009, I had an awesome T-Mobile connection. I always had at least 2 bars on 3G and most of the time it was 3 or 4. It also never dropped back to Edge either. Unfortunately, where I live and work, that is not the case.

The phone I really want, is the Atrix 4G. I've heard AT&T's 4G uses LTE as well as HSPA+, so I am hopeful that the speed and coverage will be great.

I don't have any friends in my area that have a 3G phone on AT&T so I was wondering what their network is like.

The coverage maps say "Very Good" and "Good" mostly. Hardly any areas that are less than that... Though, T-Mobile coverage says pretty much the same thing.

With the iPhone possibly coming to Verizon, do you think the network would be improved?

AT&T's 4g will use both LTE and HSPA+, but the LTE isn't out yet and I am pretty sure the Atrix is just HSPA+.

Coverage in Atlanta has been good the few times I have been there, but I was mostly out towards College Park and not downtown. That said, Bellsouth/Cingular was headquartered in Atlanta before merging with SBC/AT&T so I would imagine that the coverage would be pretty good.

It was good when I lived there, but it has been 10 years :D I lived in Stone Mountain and Roswell and worked downtown and on the northside, I never had any issues.

3G coverage is pretty much 100% downtown, midtown and buck head. Stays that way along the i20 corrider all the way up through covington at least...

Works great from hotels where i am normally 5 to 8 floors up but also works in the record departments of hosptials i work at, as long as they are on the outside wall.

Move one or two rooms in from the concrete buildings edge and 3g is toast. Move 4 or 5 rooms and you wont even get a cell signal for edge or calls.

At&t works on a high frequency solution so the concrete walls kill it. I have heard rumor that the hspda+ or what ever it is called will work on a low frequency 700mh and be able to penetrate much further into buildings?

To be honest that sounds almost similar to my t mobile service except slightly better. I work on the top floor of my building (woot ) so that should help.

Although at college I get no 3g at all, inside or out I have to use edge which is incredibly slow. If I know I'll be at college for a while I'll switch to wifi.

I work in stone mountain btw. I'm switching anyway purely for the atrix 4g. It seems that my worry about poor service was stupid in the first place, all carriers have their weak and strong points.

Thanks for the insightful replies!

Actually your incorrect AT&T 3G is now 850Mhz( the 1900 has been almost
completely phased out and is only for areas with no 850 compatibility) alot lower than tmobiles 1700/2100 the reason why hospitals kill the signal is they have signal blockers in the interior as to not mess with the equipment.

That might be true in the East but here in Texas, the 1900MHz 3G band is extremely strong (I know because my phone does not have the 850MHz 3G band yet I get pretty fast 3G throughout most of the greater Houston area).

That could be because the majority of phones are on the 850Mhz so you get the 1900 pretty much to yourself :D

Considering At&t mobility headquarters is in Atlanta Ga, the service would naturally be pretty amazing. My personal experience is definitely immaculate--never having a single dropped call or slow data speeds in any of the greater Atlanta areas, so far.

I thought AT&T was based out of Texas?

From Wikipedia:

On June 27, 2008, AT&T announced that it would move its corporate headquarters from 175 East Houston Street in San Antonio to One AT&T Plaza in Downtown Dallas.[8][16] The company said that it moved to gain better access to its customers and operations throughout the world, and to the key technology partners, suppliers, innovation and human resources needed as it continues to grow, domestically and internationally[17]

AT&T Inc. previously relocated its corporate headquarters to San Antonio from St. Louis in 1992, when it was then named Southwestern Bell Corporation. The company's Telecom Operations group, which serves residential and regional business customers in 22 U.S. states, remains in San Antonio.[citation needed]

Atlanta continues to be the headquarters for AT&T Mobility, with significant offices in Redmond, Washington, the former home of AT&T Wireless. Bedminster, New Jersey is the headquarters for the company's Global Business Services group and AT&T Labs. St. Louis continues as home to the company's Directory operations, AT&T Advertising & Publishing.[18]
