Android Question

Hey guys, new to the Android world, and I just wanted to ask what Google Android is? Is there a difference between Google Play Edition and Google Android?

I just purchased a phone online, and it says it has Google Android 4.3, I just wanted to know if this is the same as the Google Play Edition.

Thanks much for any feedback!

This is the operating system(Google Android

Thanks for the info, but just to clarify, when you say "this is the operating system", does that mean its a Google version of Android?

Wouldn't that be the same as the Google play edition?

Thanks again.

Android is an operating system developed by Google.

Many manufacturers add their own interfaces and apps on top of Android. A few phone models are sold both with the manufacturer's additions and without, and the version without is a "Google Play Edition" of that handset.

Whether what you have is a Google Play Edition or not I can't say, because I don't know what phone you have, where you bought it from, or what country you live in: only a few phones have Google Play Editions, and these are sold via the Google Play store (hence the name) in North America only.

Hi thanks for that clarification, the phone I got is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra C6833 from US via eBay.

Let me ask you this if I may, does the stock Android of that phone come with Google apps preloaded, or is it just a Sony Android with their own apps?

The reason I ask this is because one seller on eBay says it comes preloaded with Google apps (non Gpe), and another seller doesn't mention Google at all.

Thanks again.

They probably don't mention Google apps because that's taken for granted.

Generally Android phones outside of China come with most Google apps installed. Manufacturers sometimes replace some of them (the Calendar app most commonly, and the Launcher - the app that provides the desktop and app drawer), but mostly their apps are in addition.

P.S. Welcome to the forum :)

I also noticed they are both the exact same model, but one comes with Android 4.2 and the other with 4.3. I know they are upgradable to 4.4kitkat most likely, but its weird and confusing that there are differences like this for the same damn phone lol.

Any reason why that is? Sorry I am just a little confused and paranoid as I just purchased it and wanted to make sure I got the right thing.

Thanks bro!

Well I've no direct experience with this device, but I can tell you that it was originally released with 4.2, so probably the difference is whether the software has been upgraded or not.

Please note that if a device is sold through a network they will normally have made some software mods themselves, which means that it's up to the network to provide updates. Hence network-branded devices get updates more slowly.

Of course the single most important thing is to check is that the device is not locked to a network.
