This is for a Samsung Galaxy S3 (belonging to a family member) that has begun to run slowly, losing charge quickly and sometimes getting very hot when seemingly doing nothing.
I am a mobile phone/Android newbie, but guess that the cause might be shortage of space on the fixed internal memory and the the external SD card.
Internal memory: total 11.25GB available: 1.74GB. I can account for this. Memory Manager apps, e.g. My Files, show that 95% of the space are video and pics taken by S3 camera. I will delete these after backing them up onto a PC. No problem with that.
But I don't understand how the space is used on the
External SD card: total 14.83GB available: 10MB
There is about 1GB of jpg pictures in /DCIM/Camera folder. The rest
.downloadTemp folder No files
.spotlight-v100 folder Store-V1 file message 'No apps can perform this action' when clicking (to Open)=M
folder Store-V2 files with message M when clicking
.temporaryItems Folders501 message M for the files
.Thrashes folder 501 message M for the files
Android folder with subfolders but No files
DCIM folder with Camera folder with about 1GB of jpg files
LostDir folder No files
Many files message M when clicked
I don't understand.
Q1. Is there an app or some other way to get the sizes of all folders and files on the SD card? (so that I can check that all parts add to 14.83GB)
Q2. Is there a way to verify the SD card is healthy and all of it can be used, i.e. that there are no 'bad sectors/sections' on it that no longer can be used (and that may or may not be included in the space statistics)?
Q3. In Android Settings there is a (re)format SD card command. I assume this command reformats the external SD card (ExtSdcard) and not the internal memory referred to as sdcard0. Shall I use this?
Q4. I think, but am not sure, the external SD card can also be reformatted from a PC via a USB data cable.
If so, is this better/worse than reformatting from Android Settings?
Q5. Where can I read more about what is on Android external SD cards?
