What is ROM??

I am a novice ...so ,I have no idea about what is a ROM...will someone explain me :D....What is it and Why is it needed?? What is it's use in a mobile phone
I have SGS ..I have 2 GB ROM ....
 
A ROM is a custom firmware and firmware is the operating system your phone uses. So like windows to a PC.

Edit: I probably should have thought before I dove in there. Do you mean ram. Ram is the amount of space you're phone has to process the info apps need to run. So the more apps you have running the more of that 2GB ram will be used.
 
Not clear yet ...I think the Operating System is Android and If ROM is the OS then what the heck is 2GB of ROM

Have a look at the specs of SGS in gsmarena....There it is written
 
Well ROM is read only memory which means it can't be written over easily so its the space reserved for system files, ie, firmware.
