Root What is S-on and S-off?

rjmendus

Newbie
The title says it all. This may be a dumb question but I want root my phone. When I went to some sites it said something about S-on and S-off. So what is it? How is it related to rooting? And if you guys have a best guide for rooting wildfire S please give me the link:)

Thanks in advance.

The "S" refers to NAND storage security, so "Security On" and "Security Off". It has a number of effects, but the most obvious is that if you have both S-Off and root you can write to the /system partition while running Android, so easily remove system apps (though on my device changing the sizes of the internal storage partitions is the main use).

This makes it easier to make some changes, but of course easier to mess up if you are careless, so you should always take a nandroid backup (backup made using recovery) before playing with system files.

As for rooting guides, have a look in the All Things Root Guide sticky post.

I recently unlocked my htc evo 4g and so that basically means it's rooted right?
Anyway, I try installing an app that requires your phone to be rooted but when I open the app, which is "screenshot" it says "only works on rooted phones.such as other apps that require rooted phones.
So I go back and check my phone and it says it's "s-on" and I remember hearing that my phone has to have "s-off" in order for rooting to work.
what is going on and how do I fix this? Anyone?
Many Thanks (:

There is no need to gain S-Off anymore if you are talking about the Wildfire S. I wouldn't know about the evo. If you want to root, check out this thread:
