Help What is the "1" in a circle next to a contact?

Hi, one of my contacts, my father in law actually, has a blue circle and the number "1" next to his name.

If this signifies a missed call or something, how to get rid of it, seeing as I have called him numerous times since this appeared and he *never* sends text messages?
