What is the best GPS app/ MotionX alternative?e

I did some searching, but only turned-up old (2+ years) threads. I'm hoping things have advanced some since then...

I've been using MotionX for iphone for a couple of years, and am making the switch to Android, only to find out there isn't an Android version.

I'm looking for something other than the typical Google Maps and road GPS apps; the ability to download maps for offline use (important), including true topo/terrain/contour, marine charts, etc., plus track recording, custom waypoints, import/export to/from PC, etc.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by all of the GPS related apps for Android, and the first bunch I've looked at were unimpressive, to say the least. "Sygic" looks somewhat promising, but they appear to want to play games with price, which turns me off in principle (no problem paying for an app, just don't tell me it's "free" when in reality it's a demo, with the price nowhere to be found). I'm also playing with Maverick and Orux, although there's a bit of stumbling around in the learning curve with these... regardless, they're all pretty weak compared to MotionX (better than my Garmin).

Anyway, instead of spending days downloading and learning apps, I'm hoping to learn something from others' experiences...

Never mind re: Sygic; I went ahead and downloaded some maps and poked around, and it's not what I'm looking for anyway. Orux, however, shows a little promise, it just has a bit of a learning curve. Still hoping someone has some other suggestions though.

Locus is hard to beat but looks complex at first as it can do so much. I've tried so many but ended up only keeping & buying Orux & Locus. They are not filled with annoying gimmicks IMO & can do so much & also are clean, efficient & constantly improved & lean unlike other bloated resource hungry Apps.

Yea, like I mentioned, I have Orux and Maverick an they appear to have potential for at least adequacy, with Orux being a little more flexible; it's just not the most user friendly and it's taking me more time to explore it. It looks like I may just have to use multiple apps to cover my needs. I'm also looking at "Alpine Quest" and "Backcountry Navigator" (as Harry pointed out).

I haven't come across Trimble or Locus, I'll take a look.

I don't see anything unique about Motion X features & there are SO MANY Apps that do the same or more, other than maybe having proprietary maps. I can't see if Motion X has those & or uses public maps. I have not seen that exact UI with any Android app if that's what you miss. You'll probably find the best featured GPS Apps being Locus & Orux boring as they don't have the eye candy of Motion X vs. more features & function.

Some of the sports or running Apps like Edmondo remind me of Motion X but they maybe won't have maps other than Google? There are many of these Apps.

GPS Essentials is also a full featured app but again more function than fashion.

There are so many GPS Apps out there.

i know this is a little late, but what the hell, i just started using, Navfree USA: Free Satnav. its excellent, fully featured, and it truly is free, no hidden fees, or having to pay to use certain features, great app

Dual Sport Maps and GPS Resources

App isn't currently available due to

"Google shut down a necessary mapping API which requires me to do a site rewrite. I have no time or resources to do this currently so the website is hobbled. Editing does not work. You can still download your maps easily enough by clicking My Maps. Searching for maps has changed slightly, the click and drag searching is broken. You can now pan and zoom to an area and then click the search button in the bottom left corner of the screen."


Crafty has to re write it but I think he will when he has time.
