Hello,

I would like to root my phone but not install and rom. Is there are a way to do this, if so how? Like I said, I want to root the phone, not install a rom for 2.2.2.

The RH, head on over to SDX Developers for a nice guide on root access for 2.2.

The guide can be found here.

Or you may use my guide in the All Things Root section of the Transform board here on Android Forums.

The recovery took but it will not let me use the voice key or anything to select an option, the up and down keys do work though. And is stuck in recovery mode. Help!

Ok, so I figured it out, there is this little thing called reading instructions. lol Awesome and simple guide. :)

Can I ask what guide you used please?

I'm at a major crossroad. I want to root but just haven't completely made up my mind to do it.

If you have question during the process I can help as I just rooted my phone. The phone runs much faster and now I can delete Sprint apps and move everything to SD.

Thank you and yep, the Sprint apps are my main target and why I want to root.

OOPS. Yes that was after/during the SW Updater CL14 download/install.

I do have the SWUpgrade shortcut on my desktop now so it looks like it did install. Just not sure it did correctly . "C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Upgrade.exe"

That link you gave me is to the Transform manual?

You need to make sure you have the samsung drivers for the phone installed first, this is not the same as the SW Updater. And that you can transfer data between the computers and phone before the SD Updater will work.

When I plug the phone in with USB it is recognized. Should I have had the phone hooked up to the PC when installing the SW Updater?

So you solved the "device no installed problem"? It does not matter if the device is plugged in or not, but your best bet is to start with the phone turned off. As you will have to pull the battery several times.

It was always recognized by my PC. Just when running the SW Updater at the end it showed the 'No driver found' error.

My phone is plugged into the PC now and I have the USB storage going. Should I just proceed with the instructions?

*Sorry, Nervous...

Ok, two things, do not mount the phone (at any time during SW), also you need usb debugging on. After which turn your phone off, and follow the SW instructions. Mounting the phone will tell the PC that it is an SD card not a phone.

I just copied the Puma kernel onto the SD card as per the instructions. Now I'm going to unplug the phone. USB debugging is on.

I will not plug the phone back in until instructed to by the SW Updater.

I may return. Hopefully I catch onto this sooner than later. :o

Hope so and thanks!

Gonna let the phone charge all the way up so it might be this evening before I get back to this. I'll let ya know one way or the other how it goes.

Thanks again!

It didn't seem to work.

I'm back into my phone but nothing has changed.

8. Using one of the kernels you downloaded, go to 'Apply zip from SD Card' and select your kernel. Apply, and boot to system through 'Reboot options'. Congratulations. You now have 2.2 rooted with custom recovery. Boot to system, download an application requiring root and make sure it works. If you have any issues, comment below.

Do I do this from the computer or within the phone and if so what app will open it?

Ok, follow steps 1-6 as in the video up to (1:29)
