Help what is the thing on the front left of the phone?

i have a normal samsung epic case. the kind of bulky one. on the case, there is an opening for something. what does that do? it seems like it does nothing.

It is a hole for a lanyard. If you take the back cover off, you can see that you can wrap a tiny string around a little post there. In some countries it is popular to dangle a charm or something like that from the phone.
