Now that we know what sort of headphones we use, how about sharing what you use to power those 'phones? Obviously a low-power cellphone is less than ideal for listening to music with the high end cans that many of us have! So what have ye?
At home I use a Linux PC as my music player, with an inexpensive sound card (price doesn't matter in the digital domain) that I have fitted with a TXCO, feeding a Symetrix Lucid DA9624 DAC, with an option to use the DACs in my PreSonus Central Station.
The Lucid DAC:
The Central Station:
While each of these provide enough power to drive most headphones to a reasonable level, since I'm not a reasonable person I had to add a Crown D-75, delivering as much as 35000 mW into each channel.
For comparison's sake, my AKG headphones are rated at a massive 1600 mW maximum power level. Needless to say, the Crown amp just loafs along, and guarantees that there will never be any amplifier clipping!
For portable use I have a COWON/JetAudio X5 (60GB) PMP, with Ogg/Vorbis music files loaded onto it. Currently I'm using a Headroom Total Bithead to do the binaural conversion and amplification. (Not that the X5 needs the extra power!)
The X5:
Total BitHead:
I'm looking at the FiiO line of products to replace my aging components. Anyone have any experience with this brand?
Now show me yours!
