What prepaid carrier are you using?

I was so happy to ditch my Verizon Galaxy Nexus for an unlocked Nexus 5 and start going the prepaid route, though it has not been without issue. T-Mobile was my first choice, but they wouldn't transfer my number (very important to me) since they have zero presence in my home town where the number originates. I'd have no service when I visited my parents, so it was a non-starter anyway. Sprint informed me that they don't really do prepaid like AT&T and T-Mobile do, but were very kind in offering me an $80/month plan under a 2 year contract for the phone I just bought off-contract... no thanks.

I'm currently on the $60 plan with AT&T for unlimited talk and text and 2GB of data, which is not really enough for me in an ideal world.

I'm curious to know what plans you guys are using. Has anyone found anything that's $60 or less that provides more than 2GB of data with reasonable speed and coverage? If so, what's the catch?

I live in San Francisco by the way and visit family in Illinois often.
 
You can check out more MVNOs like Straight Talk (avail on AT&T network, though data use policies are vague and sometimes frustrating). There are a few others you can find for AT&T. I find it hard to shop for them, to be honest, but that's where your other options are. I happen to be set up for Tmo, though you said reception is poor.

T-metro.
officially a metropcs customer. using a GSM phone so automatically it uses T-mobile towers. 60$ a month for unlimited talk, text, 4GLTE data (although at my location only has 3G) still its unlimited amount. so far i have used 57 GB highest in a month. we have other members here in this forum that went higher!
 
Ting.com No contract, no picking plans. Just pay for what you use. Nothing more, nothing less.
Been on it for a few weeks now. If you in a good 4G area, I seen damn near 20mbs.. (I also live in the bay area)

Cool concept! Right now I'm in the "2% that wouldn't save money" on the TMo $30 plan, but the lack of minutes is a pain sometimes

I'm on the T-Mobile $30/mo 100 talk min unlimited data plan too... so far it has worked out fine, but I also just 'hope' that I don't need more than 100 talk minutes ;) Good thing with the prepaid month to month plan is that you can always change plan or carriers if your needs change! :)

Ting does have a great plan, where you only pay for what you use.
 
With the MVNO prepaid networks its important to consider who's towers you'll actually be operating on. For instance, Ting uses Sprint towers, so Sprint's network in your area is something to consider.

Also, for the $30 plan with 100 minutes, check into wifi calling with google voice. :thumbup:

Yeah I should set that up if I ever need to use it. I have a MagicJack at home for my 'house phone', I currently use that for extended chats if needed :) I think it was $100 for 5 years of service... unlimited minutes.
 
So the N5 works with at&t sims? I have one from straight talk in my Gnex now and have no desire to switch carriers. But the google play page only lists t-mobile and sprint as carriers. t-mobile has no data in my area and sprint is very spotty.

That's because only T-Mobile and Sprint are selling it direct. However, yes, the Nexus 5 has AT&T radios, including LTE bands.
 
I have T Mobile and pay 50 a month, 57 with tax. Unlimited talk , text and 1MB of data.

They upgraded the data to 1MB a month and last month I used 57kb.

I live in the Dallas area and there is wifi at almost every retail outlet. I don't need a lot of paid data, there is nothing so important that it can't wait for me to access it later.

Or.........just frequent places that I already know that have it for free.

I could never get by on 100m of talk time. That is only 1.5 hours of talking. Holy cow.......I cover that in 2 days.
 
So one more question. If I get the nexus 5 can I just take the sim card out of my gnex and put it in the new phone and I'm good to go? I wish I could remember how I set my gnex up but it was my first ST phone so it's the only one that I've used this at&t sim in.

You hypothetically can do that, assuming it's the same size (I can't remember if gnex was mini or micro sim). However AT&T Straight Talk SIMs have changed in order to provision LTE usage. So using your old sim might not allow you to access AT&T's LTE network.
 
Thanks. How important is LTE? How do I find out if it would even benefit me in my area?

If I had to get a new sim, is it possible to keep my current phone number?
