What should screen protector cover?

Should a screen protector just cover the area of the display or should it cover the "buttons" too? I'm finally going to use the ones that came with my phone after getting a replacement recently. My original Maxx had some scratches on the display. This particular screen protector has a measuring grid used to determine the screen length and width and then cut.

It should cover the full glass screen, less the pin hole mic on the bottom between the buttons and you should have two cut outs on top for the camera in the top right and the two small circles in the upper left or if you are cutting it, you can cut about an 1/8" above the top of the screen, so the top end above, stays open.
