What to do with a lost s3

I have just been out walking my dog in the local park where I found a S3. It is on face lock so I cannot enter phone book to find numbers like mum or dad so I can return phone. I am going to take it to local police station.
Should I hold onto it for a couple of hours to see if anyone calls it so I can identify owner and return or take it straight to police?
Is there a way to unlock it so I can find owner identity?
Alternatively its on EE network so should I take it into an Orange shop?
What does anyone think is the best option as I would like to think think this would happen to me if I lost my S3.

When you press the power button to turn on the screen there should be an "emergency call" button. Press that followed by the + key on the dial pad to see if they have any emergency contacts programmed in
 
Thanks SUroot just tried and no joy. Out of interest how do you set that up. I have Cerebus on mine but it would also be good to have emergency numbers on.

Im not sure what the police can do about it if u cant do anything ,

Maybe sim cards hold some info. Try brining it to a retailer based on sim card.
 
You edit the ICE contact group.

Hold into it for a couple of hours. Hopefully the orange store could track the owner via sim number but it doesn't mean they have alternative contact details.

Police would be a good bet as the owner needs a crime number more often than not for an insurance claim.
 
Well, I hung onto it and a call came through from dad. I answered, and 'dad' was surprised, I then explained what had happened. He has just collected his daughters phone and I got a bottle of red and a bottle of white for my troubles. Everybody happy.

I also learned two things, ice emergency contacts from SUroot. Thanks

You can put a message on the lock screen. I put 'alternative no if lost with reward'. I think this is a jb thing as i cannot remember seeing it on ics.

Settings----Lock screen-----owner information---enter your message

Now lets get started on that red!

Yes, it was on ICS, and is well-worth taking a second or two to fill out. Just don't do what I nearly did - give your mobile number as the means to contact you :-s

Glad it all worked out. I do generally trust people but, if you ever hand over to a third party something valuable that you've found, remember to get a receipt to make sure it won't get *lost* in the system.
