Root What will i loose if i root?

I am looking into rooting my wife's phone but i want to know if i will loose any features or anything else if i do so. I heard of people loosing mms/sms and other things (or is that with a ROM)Will everything be as it was with the exception of having more control over the phone?

if u root it u will not lose anything......only when u put a rom on your phone u will loose some apps that u installed
