What worked for me.

Have a buddy with a ZTE Merit on StraightTalk AT&T.

I used this ROM and followed the instructions posted. I had issue partitioning the card with CWM. I used the windows program "Mini Tools" to format and set the 8GB card up.

I used the tool to set the 8GB card to 7GB and have the 1GB for app/internal memory space.

He now has 700+ MB free internal memory and a rooted phone.

Make sure the partition that you re-size for app storage in formatted as "EXT4" and set as "Primary" if you use the "Mini Tool" program listed below.

ROM:

i did not root. I did install cache cleaner, a heavy duty battery, and android asst. I also stopped auto updates by default which means i mostly disabled google apps that i dont want or use. Finally, i installed an app called jelly bean launcher from the play store. So, between all those , daily cleaning of cache and assistant boost apps, phone is snappy and works well on straight/at&t. Unlike a rooted phone, you are limited on space/rom, but at least an update would not lock the phone again.
