What would you do to get the most from the phone

What would be the first X # of things you would do/ did when you got your charge aside from rooting?

I'm thinking in terms of getting the best battery life, best browser abilities, best launcher, most useful apps, sms client etc.?

I'm new to android and don't want to reinvent the wheel by trying each app or setting until I figure out what works best

Heres what made my charge perfect:

Launcherpro plus: replaces stock home launcher more snappier and no lag

Xscope pro: replaces stock browser 100% faster

Handcent: replaces stock messaging gives you more options to personalize your messages.

Then of course the usual rooting: this is really the only thing that will conserve your battery and make the phone 100% faster and snappier. Hope this helps a little
