What's an "updated" Galaxy S3 (Verizon)

sergey

Android Enthusiast
So I bought a 16GB Samsung Galaxy S3 on Verizon and have been happily playing with the phone for the past few days. Today I was putting the box away when I noticed it has a little sticker on the front of the box that said "updated".

Any ideas?

I also saw this when I went to buy one, supposedly there was some kind of update to the software and Samsung is shipping them with that so reps know it's updated, I don't have a updated one but I also checked for updates and saw nothing

You only get 1GB RAM instead of 2GB.

I'm kidding. :p it's probably the change to Google Voice Search so that the phone no longer violates Apple patents.

Not sure you are completely correct. I have at least 1.6 of ram according to my running apps . USCC 16G blue.

The S3 is shipping with a new kernel that dumb downs the Google Search and stuff. Its from the Apple patent lawsuit.

The kernel is more for direct chipset and radio management, so would be nice if radio tweaks. The GS change is app level.

If you use google voice search, try some voice commands like "navigate to <some business>" or "call <someone in your contacts>" and let us know if it still works.

Also, let us know if it still works from s-voice as well.

Both commands still works for me- both on voice command and s-voice.
I checked and have the VGRL1 update.

I wondered if it improved the 4G/wifi stuff because aside from some minor GPS brain farts, it works fine.

Anyways, love the phone so far!

Sounds like the S3's Google Voice Search may not have been hindered as is widely been reported. So when you say they both still work for you, the navigate voice command actually launces the google nav. It doesn't just do a web search for the destination?

The updated Verizon phones I'm pretty sure don't have universal search. I pre ordered mine. And I still have it till they send out the update

Hell yeah!
It launches maps and asks me if I want to use Google or VZ navigator :(
That's the true crime... really? VZ navigator?

brings up an interesting question:

How can I tell how much (just to verify out of curiosity) ram my phone has? I know it's supposed to have 2gb, but when looking at the running apps, it shows 436mg used, and only 1.2GB free.

My math isn't always great, but that doesn't seem to equal 2gb.

???

Hold down home button, task manager, ram.

I believe approximately 384MB is reserved for the GPU, and the remaining 1.6x GB is left for the CPU/OS
