Help Whats First??

Hello everybody! I just made the switch from iphone to Android! I got a GS3!
I tried searching the forum for similar post but the search function kept giving me an error.

I was just curious what I should do right out of the box. As far as must have apps, battery life etc. I don't intend to root right away I want to make sure I don't get a lemon. Once I know the phone is running properly I will root. so I'm just looking to improve the initial performance of the phone and battery life and just have the best possible Android experience. I really don't want to go back to apple.

Sorry for the newb question's! I'm sure this has been asked before but I gotta start somewhere!

Personally I would not do anything. Right now just learn the phone. If you are coming from iOS there will be lots to learn. As far as battery life I don't think you should have to do anything. I'm easily getting a full day on a charge with moderate usage.

As for must have apps, this all really depends on what you want to be able to do with your phone.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Android.

Congrats and welcome!

My girlfriend and I just switched over to S3's this past weekend from iPhone 4's, and 3's before that. I love the S3 and Android OS a lot more than the Apple platform. The last couple of days, my girlfriend has been having mixed feelings about the S3, I think just because she misses a lot of paid photography apps we both had on our iPhones, not to mention there is a little bit of a learning curve. Although today, she sounded much happier about the S3.

There's a lot to like about the S3 and the Android OS. Once you learn a few tricks of the trade, like I did today, you'll really start to like/love the S3.

And speaking of apps, a lot of the apps you had to pay for on the iPhone, you have access to the same or similar for Android, for free! Not all mind you, but a lot!

Enjoy!

Welcome aboard. I have been nothing but thrilled with my S3, and I am sure you and your girl will feel the same. I would check out this thread to learn some cool new tricks with your phone. There is always something new that someone discovers, and you won't find these in the manual

I think the most important must have app for this phone is swiftkey 3. Introducing SwiftKey 3 I really hated the stock keyboard and this new keyboard really made a world of difference for me at least. Its got a free 30 day trial if you want to check it out.

Absolutely agree. This is my first phone w/o a hard keyboard, and Swiftkey3 has absolutely made the transition a better one. The stock keyboard was not to my liking either. I tried a few other keyboards before I came across Swiftkey. I did the 30 day trial, and only a week in committed to purchasing it. One of it's strongest features is how it learns your typing and phrases by tapping into social media apps (not just texting). I can type like a madman, with typos all over the place and it almost always knows what I am trying to say. Pretty darn cool in my book.

Swiftkey is also on sale for $0.99 right now. However, I (and many others) prefer Swype over Swiftkey. It's really just personal preference.

Swype is available for free through their beta program (it's been in "beta" for 2-3 years...don't worry about that designation). It takes a little time to get used to, but once you do, you can type very fast with Swype.

Thanks everybody! Loomer that thread was Great! Mcausey, Swiftkey looks great! I'm definitely gonna try when my phone arrives. Ylexot, I've playd with Swpye before its not my cup of tea. but thank you for your input!

If anybody else has any ideas I would love to hear them!!

I would take a look at another browser besides stock. My choice is Chrome, but other people have different favorites.

Using any browser on the phone, search amazon appstore, go to the site and click to install the amazon appstore app. They have a free app every day. Most are not too great but I've gotten some very useful (and kinda pricey) apps that way.

Some fun apps to play around with and impress your friends are google goggles and google sky map.

My most indispensable app is Catch. Once you install it and sign up online you can make notes, voice notes, lists, etc. that are all automatically backed up to the cloud.

I have been using chrome for the iphone since i came out and its awesome!
I can only assume it will be better on Android. I will check out that app as well thanks for the help. I have a list going.
