What's point of external SD card?

I've also had cards corrupted. The Barnes & Noble Nook corrupted a card and lost all the books. I had forgotten to update the computer, but had updated the Acer Tablet which also uses a card. I got everything back.

With the photos, I put most of what I will usually keep on the phone in one file. That file gets transferred to the new device.
The other photos get stashed on a portable drive.

It makes a great deal of sense now with devices that can get Android6 Marshmallow. You can convert the external SD card to internal memory. I have a 16 Gb Moto X Pure with a 64 Gb external card. It was formatted when I put it in the phone and I had the choice of making it external or internal. I chose internal and now have 56Gb of internal memory available.
