I wanted to get some guidance from people much smarter than me about what's coming in the future.
I'm currently on a Verizon Samsung GS5 running rooted Android 5.0. No major beefs at this point, though it was a bit rocky getting here (massive thanks to @ironass for his tremendous guides and assistance!). I have no plans for an imminent phone upgrade, but I'll probably be looking for a new phone in 6-12 months. I have one of the old grandfathered unlimited data plans, so...
...1. I'm staying with Verizon
...2. I'm planning to buy my next phone outright
If my recent experience is any indicator, Samsung and other manufacturers/carriers are leaving fewer and fewer holes for rooting their devices, and it's becoming harder and harder to find/utilize those holes. That brings me to my question: what to do in the future when purchasing a new phone?
Obviously, we don't know exactly what's going to be released to the market in the distant future, but in general conceptual terms, if I want to be able to use root applications and the full breadth of the device's capability, am I limited to purchasing just the developer editions of whatever new phones are released? Are there certain manufacturers that are easier/harder to unlock that I should consider? What (if any) other options are available?
I highly value the opinions of the people here, so I'd appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, or conversation on these topics. Thanks!
