Help Whats the best way to transfer documents to SGS

I've been having a real battle trying to get a large quantity of .pdf files across from my PC to the Galaxy S.

I've tried wired with Kies, wired through windows explorer (My Computer), I've tried wireless using Android Manager and Droid PhoneControl. Yet time and time again either the SGS or my external SD card can't handle the transfer.

The files all transfer across and look normal until you go to open them. I get the message with ThinkFree PDF Viewer that "Error opening file. It appears to be damaged." With PDF to Go, "I get Error opening file. It may not be a valid PDF file". The files are genuine pdf files and sometimes about 5% of them are viewable after transfer on the phone but it's just so hit and miss.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to either why this is or what can be done to overcome this and transfer large numbers of pdf files across quickly?

Try downloading the Adobe PDF app it might a compatibility issue. Second did you try transferring in mass storage mode?

I think I've got to the bottom of it.

I transferred about 150 pdf's across perfectly to the internal card by using Kies as I had done before. This leads me to conclude that it is my 32Gb external memory card that I was previously transferring to, that is playing up again.

Often the card works fine but every now and again it wipes everything off it or creates gobble-de-gook file names. The fact that some pdfs were transferring fine is probably indicitive of the unpredictability of this defective card:(.

Thanks anyway.

I think I now understand what the problem is.

Was the card purchased from Ebay? Is it a 32 gb Kingston card?

Yes, purchased from Ebay.

Although it's a Class 4 (which speed test app initially confirmed). The actual Ebay title was "Real 32gb Micro sd(hc) class 4 memory card UK seller". Brought from William Burton in Stow, Licolnshire.

Card worked fine for a couple of days and then became faulty. When complained to seller, he fobbed me off time and time again saying a replacement would be sent out. All the while nothing was sent. Then the seller started to avoid my calls after I asked for the recorded tracking number he'd promised to forward me, even pretending at one time that he wasn't the same person I'd previously spoken!

If nothing else, avoid this seller at all cost.

goyal.sanchit, have you had similar problems. Do you know anyway to make the card stable?

Well unfortunately you have been duped by the seller. Selling fake memory cards and mp3 players with low storage capacity than claimed is a flourishing business on Ebay.

Basically what happens is that the card has less storage space in reality but is tricked to show 32 GB of available space. Real holding capacity is something like say 16 gb.

So when you transfer 30 gb of data on card you can virtually see 30 GB on card but in reality it cant store that much of data as there is non existent space.

This results in seeing unreadable names or multiple duplicates of some files.

I had the same issue with my Mp3 player. I formatted the mp3 player with the HP Usb format software and then it showed correct space which was around 4gb. Earlier it used to show 8gb.

So only solution would be formatting the card with some good software which would remove the "tricked memory" and would then display the correct memory. You would lose storage space because it didnt exist in the 1st place but the remaining you get you can use it without any issues.

Goyal, your a star for that bit of useful information.

As mentioned the speed test agreed that it was Class 4 and also said that it was 32Gb. However, in my mind I thought that there was something fishy going on. I believed it was more than a coincidence that it always stopped transferring files across after a certain amount of files. I thought it was a bad sector at this particular place but your theory makes more sense.

I'd formatted the card a number of times but only with the PC or the phones own software. Is there any particular free software that you can recommend? I'll happily use that to try and make the card stable because as you correctly say, it's useless otherwise.

All the best

I had used this software from HP.

Code:
 http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml

The MP3 player originally had FAT32 file system. What I did was changed the file system (I dont remember now what I changed it to) and tried again. It didnt work. Then I changed it back to FAT32 and voila correct memory was shown.

I am guessing that changing the file system and formatting and then changing back to the original filesystem did the trick. But I am not sure about that.

Well the plot thickens......

I downloaded the HP formatting applicatiion and ran the software in NTFS which then slowly showed progress in the application completed icon. After about 2.5 hours the software came back with an error message, as expected.

I then switched it to FAT and again left the application to do it's job. This time though when it got to the end it came up with an error message saying that it could not complete because the disc size is too big. I then returned it to the SGS and had to format it.

On completion the disc size still shows available space as 30.16GB. Whether this is still the card tricking the phone or just a limitation of the HP software not being able to go as high as 32GB I do not know?

I would change the original title of this thread to something more appropriate but I can not see an option to edit it unfortunately.

A mod would be able to do that for you. Just report the post and request the mod to change the title for you.

Since the issue is with the card it might be a good idea to search on google how various other people got around with their problem.
