What's the weirdest thing you ever ate?

At nine grand a pound I think I'll pass. I'm a bit leery of the genetically altered grains and fruits I find in the stores today. No way am I touching that stuff.

Can't be any worse than margarine or Twinkies...

I don't do either. But I'm sure I consume plenty that is not good for me. There is something about engineered ingredients that concerns me. Perhaps all is right and there will be no long term effects but it certainly leaves room for speculation. I just don't want to be the lab rat.

Probably crickets, but I wouldn't say it was all that weird, just unusual. They're very common in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, and they serve them in Oaxacan restaurants in Los Angeles. The oddest part of it is that the legs/antennae do get stuck in between your teeth.

Goat brains don't sound gross to me at all, being that in Mexico we have cow brain tacos (cesos) and are very common, and delicious, by the way.

Someone mentioned sea urchin, and where I'm from in Ensenada, Baja California, they make ceviche out of it, and it's quite good, although I'll admit not everyone likes it. It's also fairly common and not as expensive as it probably is in Los Angeles. (I've never tried sea urchin outside of Ensenada).

Someone else joked about trying everything once. I'm actually a very picky eater too, but I will literally try everything once, unless it smells gross, because my immediate assumption is that if it smells bad, it will probably taste bad. I'm more of a "I hate people that fudge up a simple or traditional recipe" type of picky. Some people try to put their own twist on a recipe and most of the time it fails to improve it. I'll give you an example, I was born and raised in the city where fish tacos were created (the battered kind), and here in Los Angeles it became a trend to make all kinds of ridiculous "creative" salsas to go with the tacos (*cough* hipsters *cough*). Let's just say if you put mango salsa on an Ensenada style fish taco, I hate you.

Green eggs and ham, with Sam I am.
I had the here, I had them there,
just about anywhere.
I had them in a box.
I had them with a fox.

Balut and "Chocolate" meat. (Not chocolate but something far far different :D)

I am Filipino American so I've tried and seen alot of different foods. I also worked in a call center with an international department with about 35-40 different nationalites so I've seen and tasted alot that I cannot remember lol

Ok we're having a conversation here at work, and talking about exotic/weird things people have eaten. Someone mentioned goat's brain. I wouldn't eat brain because I have an aversion to anything with that kind of gelatinous/rubbery consistency, but I wondered what it tastes like.
My girlfriend................................. cooking

When I was growing up.. there was a brief period where these were available.

of course nobody (including the manufacturer, or me for that matter) had ever eaten a hedgehog, so we didn';t know if they tasted right.

I remember someone from the company on television saying... "...but you don't know they didn't taste of hedgehog"

(if anyone is interested, they tasted a lot like beef flavoured crisps)
