Root What's this "root" stuff all about?

New Android user here.
Sold off my iphone and got an Inspire.

Is rooting it the same thing as installing a new operating system from Google instead of the customized OS from HTC?

Sounds cool... I assume it'll come without any weird HTC stuff installed.

What are the downsides to doing something like this?

Okay - some googling and I figured out that "rooting" is just giving yourself root (administrator) access so you can manipulate the phone to your will.

Is there a good, safe operating system I can install that will be clean? No hacks/back doors/virus?
Something well known, simple and up to date with cool abilities?
I think 2.4 is the current version of Android - can I install that?
