What's up with ATT ?

CallBob

Newbie
I was just told that i can't get att service because i have a 2g and not a 3g . I have a HTC Wildfire S . I went to the ATT store and they put in a sim card and said i can activate it when I'm ready . I just tried to activate it for a 10 cent a minute plan and was told they don't work with HTC wildfire s phones and wont give me service ! This is what i got to first setup ...

Refer to the device manufacturer

First I have to just say: typical AT&T bullshit.

I think the easiest solution is that you head back to the AT&T store that gave you the card and said "activate it when (I'm) ready". They obviously believe that you should be able to. Then leave only when you are a confirmed active AT&T customer or with all your money in hand.

It would be to their advantage to have you using 2g since you would not be clogging their network. Especially since you know you are on 2g and it is not the network being slow.

Of course, I am also assuming that the Widlfire is an AT&T phone or unlocked.

Yes , unlocked .. no luck seeing them today .. closed for memorial day ..they wont be happy to see me tomorrow !

It's at&t. threaten class action. They probably get that all day long though

Ugh typical American and suing BS.

Just go in there and tell them to activate it, if they can't get your money back and go somewhere else. You obviously do not care about data speed, so just find a provider that will give you good service.

Why did they give you an unactivated SIM card? Try a mvno that uses at&t. That was what I did with Verizon when they told me I couldn't activate a non e-911 phone, I went to Page plus

I think one of the issues could be that you're trying to activate a smartphone on a dumphone only sim plan. You might need a sim card that enables data and sets the apn's necessary to obtain data. Or if it doesn't set the apn's automatically, you might need to set them manually.

I'll sue you for defamation of character, mental harassment and profiling!

;)

Hey I am American too haha I just hate how peoples first reaction is to sue. Like that solves jack and really it is just due to greed in wanting to get rich quick. God forbid people actually work hard and earn their dollars.

But anyways, to the OP just go into the ATT store, if you don't like the service you are getting, get rid of them, that is the advantage of being the CONSUMER. You get to make the decision in what is best for YOU.

You may be right, but I would still make someone at the ATT store do it, just to be sure that it is working correctly and that they claim it to be working properly, then if it doesn't you can either get your money back or switch service.

2G bands are different than 3G bands. Your 3G bands will have to match to get 3G service. Your phone might only work on T-Mobile even if it's unlocked if it doesn't support AT&T frequencies.

If I've read the first post right your handset has 3G in the 900 and 2100 bands. Great in Europe and much of the rest of the world, no use in the USA. It doesn't matter that it supports 2g in the ATT frequency bands, that's a different radio interface and will only work for 2G. So if that's the case there is nothing ATT can do to make 3G work with this handset.

Where did you buy it from?

if i read the OP's post correctly he doesn't really care for 3G, but wants to use at least EDGE/GPRS service. since all phones i have used fall back to at least EDGE, i would like to assume the service is available, although if AT&T has some 'requirement' that a phone must support 3G by default, similar to how Verizon has a 'requirement' that a phone must be at least e-911 compatible, then the only means to bypass this restriction is to use a pre-paid MVNO that has no such requirement but still uses the same towers. if he wants to use AT&T the Net10/StraightTalk BYOP plan may be the way to go, and if he prefers Verizon Page Plus is a way out. although last i heard, Page Plus does not yet support data (they are mostly for those retro geeks who still use a Motorola StarTAC these days) however if all the OP wants is wifi and cellular only, this may be a preferred way out.
