What's with all the X's?

So yesterday it was announced that One Plus would be releasing it's second phone this year, the One Plus X. So that adds to the Nexus 5X, there are other phones out there with an "X" designation too.

What has Motorola started here? Is there some secret industry insider connection with "X" in the name to a solid performer at a budget price?

Just thoughts from the asylum.
