Whatsapp synchronizes with your phone's address book, so it must be setup correctly. Check settings for Contacts, and be sure you don't have some "Contacts to display" filtering inadvertantly applied. Also, if the contact in question does not have a phone number, ensure that you don't have "Only contacts with phones" selected.
