Help Whatsapp preview timestamp

Hi everyone

Just hoping Someone can help me, I have a HTC one and my whatsapp messages come up in my notification bar I can pull down from the top. I am able to read the message here, I have noticed this morning I received a message at 9.52am, I have not opened whatsapp since, however I have noticed the time change in the preview every hour or so...as I haven't been online does this mean that is the time they person sending the message has been online or does it mean the time they have been into the message they have sent me as I no they do have their 'last seen' active? Any help would be great

IMO,
it is the length of time since the message was received by your phone.

At least that is how interpret what it is doing.

when I look at the actual message, it gives the actual date, and time I received it....

I'm not sure If it is that as it will change from 15.05 to 15:43 etc if it was the length of time since the message was received surely the time itself wouldn't be changing?

I am correlating it to the Call Log in my exDialer app.
It shows all of my previous phone calls, and how long ago since I talked to them if it was 'today', otherwise, it shows the date.
