A better alternative: MySMS. Free app in the Play Store. Free messaging to other MySMS users.
And if you then install MySMS Messenger on your PC or Mac you can send and receive messages from the comfort of a big screen and the convenience of a fullsize keyboard.
While the phone stays in your pocket or on the charger.

This annual purchase of whatsapp goes through the play store for purchase.

Do you have a Play Store account set up? Isn't there a credit card associated with that?

If not...

- there are ways to get a mastercard through paypal that is a debit card for your paypal account.
- prepaid visa/mastercard
