When, and why, is "Power Off" not power off?

On a few occasions I have switched my Vodafone 785 off by pressing "Power off" and then "ok" on the subsequent screen.

It goes through its normal performance and, as far as I can tell, switches off.

Some time later, perhaps hours, it gives an alert tone - like a "ding-dong" doorbell.
A brief press of the power button wakes it up - it doesn't go through the normal switch-on sequence - and tells me that something or someone has sent a message.

That surely means that "Off" is not off at all, it's another sleep mode, albeit under deep anaesthesia.

How can I disable this annoying "feature" ?

I don't know your phone but that's not normal Android behaviour. Long pressing the power button, tapping "power off" then "ok" should shut down the phone completely.
Sorry I can't be of any help

A number of phones, HTC in particular, simulate a power off by hibernating so that when they're switched on again, they boot up nearly instantly. From memory, HTC called it "fastboot" (which was confusing, because you could use fastboot commands to talk to the device when it was in hboot).

Does your device have a similar setting perhaps?

I think that's it. There's a setting called "Quick start", which I had enabled - not really knowing the difference between it and a normal one.

I suppose that we have just found out :)

I've disabled it. Now, let's see .......
