Depends what you consider 4G. Before they got LTE T-Mobile and AT&T were calling their HSPA+ networks 4G. It's just a marketing term.

Well to be fair, I don't know of any 4G in America.

The The first use of 4G came with the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint's WiMax network, released June 1, 2010.

Shortly thereafter the others started the marketing scramble.

This gave rise to a bunch of false memes, including only LTE being 4G.

The problem was that when the Evo was under design and development, everyone expected WiMax to be adopted as the standard. It had been in committee forever and many of those of us following it expected that to be the end of a painfully long process.

By the time of the Evo release, they were back in committee again, not producing the 4G spec (WiMax 2 or LTE - Advanced) until October 2010.

Meanwhile, American carriers had decided to use the name to be whatever they wanted.

In December 2010, the ITU issued a dispensation making it ok to call Wimax, LTE and HSPA+ all 4G, they were all in it by then.

T-Mobile began advertising that it had the largest 4G network by the beginning of November 2010.
