When is VOIP coming to Google Voice for Android?

About 5 months ago, Google rolled out true VOIP for Google Voice through a Gtalk/Gmail addon. This is a great addition that proves that Google can handle VOIP. So, why have they not extended this to its Android Google Voice app yet? Anyone have any links suggesting that it is coming soon? I figured it would have been released by now.

Here is a article explaining the Gmail/Gtalk VOIP abilities. I have used it a lot and it works well. Hopefully they bring it to Android soon.

It's already on Android. Just install Google Talk, and let it pick up for your out-bound calls.

I have Gtalk installedon my Android phone (it comes with it), and I see nothing that will allow this. The only thing Gtalk on Android allows me to do is chat by means of text. There are no VOIP abilities for it like the PC client. Can you be a lot more specific?

Install Google Voice-- not google talk on your device. However- this does not eliminate the use of your minutes when you make a call. It is possible to use it without using minutes but you need what is called a SIP client to make that work.

I already have Google Voice installed (I only use it for Voice Mail). Please re-read my original post ... I am looking for information on if Google has made any more annoucements on bringing there VOIP abilities, that are avaiable on the PC through Gmail/Gtalk, to Android phones.

Gtalk/Gmail VOIP integrates with Google Voice on the PC, allowing true VOIP. It allows me to make phone calls from my PC, much like Skype. It does not use my Verizon service at all. It is true VOIP through google. I am looking for this same function in an Android app. Google has proven they can do this with the PC version. I would now like to see a mobile version. I assume it is coming since they bought Gizmo5, but I have yet to see any concrete information. I can see a day soon when we can get rid of our wireless phone service providers and use strictly WIFI or MIFI (a la Clearwire or similar). That way all I will need to do is purchase a broadband provider, saving me $80/month. Some people are already doing this through using multiple apps and convoluted tweeks, but I am looking for an easy to setup version straight from Google. I can not figure out why they haven't brought it out yet.

Google Voice in Android does that. You just have to tell your device to use it as the dialer.

I read that Google may start their own wireless network. I think they should and it should be a data only network. You only pay one flat price for the data plan and all calls are VOIP.

How do you do that? I tried going under my running apps to clear my dialer defaults, but it was already grayed out like no default has been set. So, I dont think there is anyway to change my dialer with my HTC Incredible using stock Sense. Plus, I am almost positive this does not allow pure VOIP through Google Voice. GV basically piggy backs the Verizon network. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is what every other source of information said that I could find.

Not that I've seen. I'd expect that the carriers wouldn't be happy about it for obvious reasons. You can check the usual rumor mills if you're into following rumors.

No, it does not. GV is not a VOIP solution. It uses minutes. Read the OP and make sure you understand it. Don't assume that you know what he's asking. Your answers have not been relevant and I'm guessing it's due to some misunderstanding -- possibly both in what the OP is asking and regarding GV itself.

You can set the option to use GV for outbound calls but that does not mean that GV is used in place of the dialer. It is not a dialer replacement.

Thanks Takeshi, that is the way I understand it too. Like you said, I guess it all comes down to the carriers not wanting true (full) VOIP software on their phones. Though, I am really surprised Skype and others haven't told them to screw off and just sell it anyways. We could always just side load it being that Android allows manual installs.

I saw that Verizon is appealing the new net neutrality rules. I wander if those rules require full VOIP abilities on wireless carriers networks. Anyone know?

This is interesting ... right now, Verizon and other wireless services have the right to block anything they want to (as they are currently doing with VOIP apps). But the new Net Neutrality rules just put in place will stop them from blocking/gimping voice based services by 3rd parties, such as Skype and Google Voice. So, it looks like true VOIP will finally come to mobile phones soon. Assuming the new Net Neutrality rules hold up in court. This was a quote from the article ...
The rules will prohibit mobile providers from blocking voice and other applications that compete with their services, but will not prohibit them from blocking other applications.
