Where did TrustGo Security Come From

MikeSD

Newbie
I have an app that is an anti virus program. It's called TrustGo. I don't specifically recall installing it. It's one of the last programs to be installed, so I figured it must have hitchhiked on another install or some kind of upgrade.

It looks like a popular app but I kind of distrust programs that I don't install myself, especially if it was stealthly installed because I downloaded another program. It's acting a little odd in that I get far too many "TrustGo has stopped working" errors.

Anyone know if the app TrustGo Security was part of the original software that was packaged with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1?

If it was not, anyone know which other app it may have come in through?

Thanks,

Hi MikeSD!

I don't specifically recall installing it. It's one of the last programs to be installed, so I figured it must have hitchhiked on another install or some kind of upgrade.

I'm glad you stumbled upon our security app, but that's not exactly the way we'd intended for it to happen!

TrustGo doesn't have any back-room deals with other apps to push our product on to your device without your knowledge. Besides being annoying, it has the effect, as you mentioned, of undermining our credibility as a security company. :(

Anyone know if the app TrustGo Security was part of the original software that was packaged with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1?

Certainly not. In fact, we don't even officially support tablets yet... in most cases the app runs fine, but we're still working on a "true" version.

If you are certain you didn't install TrustGo yourself, we'd love it if you could reach out to us at support@trustgo.com, and maybe provide a bit more information that might help us track down the source of this problem.

Thanks for replying TrustGo.

I'm about 99.99% sure I never intentionally installed it. I don't recall the name, other than seeing it give me the warning when it "stopped working", which made me wonder about what it was actually supposed to do. AND I haven't even given any thought to a security program yet.

I DO see that in Google Play, it shows as an installed app. But I don't know if that means I installed it or if it's just reporting it as installed. If I installed it, from there, it was most likely because something else suggested I needed it or such. Like I said, I haven't even given any thought about an anti-virus yet... but I will from now.

It looks, based on the order of my apps, that it was installed right after installing the Opera and Dolphin browsers.

I don't have any particular issue with the program, other than it will stop from time to time. OR at least the OS gives me the indication that it's stopped. Doesn't hang anything, just stops working. Other than that, I have no issue with it.

I will contact the support address.

Thanks for replying.

Followup: I contacted TrustGo support

What they told me and asked me is if I have Dolphin browser installed. Apparently they are partnered with TrustGo.

Yes, I did have Dolphin installed and coincidently (or not so coincidently) Dolphin was installed, just prior to TrustGo showing up. So somehow there is a connection between that program and TrustGo showing up. It could merely be that there was mention of TrustGo and a link, when I installed Dolphin. It could also be that both were installed, when I installed the single app.

I'm going to try and duplicate this and see if TrustGo was installed without my permission.

* I will uninstall both programs
* I will reboot
* I will install (or try to install) only Dolphin
* I will look for any message saying TrustGo is also going to be installed
* I will verify whether or not TrustGo is installed

Hopefully, there will just be a mention of TrustGo and the option to install it. But if it's done without any warning, or without my permission, that is not a proper way to place apps on a device.

I will report my results in a few hours.
