Hi and welcome to the forums.
Its a friendly place with lots of people who may be able to help you. The first thing you should do is read this thread - yes all of it, particulaly post #25:

By the time you get to the end you will realise that there are many issues benefits and questions that arise BEFORE you try to root your device.
Then
Go to the forum for your device (you've not said what it is yet) and post into the "all things root" sub forum giving as much detail about your device ie carrier, OS version, exact model No. etc and ask for advice on the best method of rooting specific to your device. There may already be a thread on the subject.
Once again good to have you here and good luck with the rooting. Remember - check that you are doing it right BEFORE you do it.

First question you'll want to ask yourself, why do you want to root?
Unless you have a reason to root, I'd say stay stock.
Otherwise you've got a good link provided for reading before diving in.
