Where is SMS History?

YossiD

Newbie
I recently changed cell providers and they reset my Galaxy SII (i9100) phone and updated me from Gingerbread to Jellybean.

Before the update, which erased most everything on the phone, I made a full backup of the phone memory by copying the contents to my PC. Now I want to restore the SMS history but I can't find any file or folder containing it (searched for words from messages). The data must be there somewhere but perhaps it is encrypted which is why I can't find it.

Does anyone know how to find the SMS history in the backup and restore it to my phone. Call history would be good too if possible.

I have searched these forums and done a general internet search, but could not find any replies.

Thanks

How did you do the backup? The SMS (and call logs) are not stored on the sd card, internal or external. They are in an sqlite database in a directory that you can't directly read without root access: /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases (mmssms.db and telephony.db respectively). So unless you used one of the sms backup apps in the play store I very much doubt you have a backup.

There is an option to back up apps and data to Google - I've never used it so don't know whether that backs up messages, but it's the only other hope I can think of. Again, you'd have had to have it turned on before the reset.

Sorry.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I just copied the the full contents of the SD cards to my PC without using any backup utilities, so I guess I'm SOL. Too bad the guy who reset the phone didn't mention that; he just said I should backup music and pictures.

Where is this sqlite database located if no on either of the SD cards?

You need to back up such data with special software, that will store it on sd card, and then you can restore it from there
