Help Which apps can I delete?

mooniepie

Lurker
I just bought the LJ Optimus V from Virgin Mobile and went to settings, applications, manage applications, and then clicked view all. There are a lot of apps that I don't even know what they are nor would I ever use them. I will list the apps and then can anyone tell me what they do and am I free to delete them without my phone messing up?

airG chat - I clicked it and it brought me to the internet browser, but it was taking too long to load so I exed out.

Poynt - I don't know what this is. Do I need it and if not can I delete it to free up space without the phone messing up?

SCVNGR - Not sure what this is.

Talk - I know this is used for messaging, but it only lets me use Google Messenger which I never use, I use AIM chat more.

TalkBack - Not sure what this is.

TTS Service - Not sure what this is.

Twidroyd - Not sure what this is.

WHERE - I have a slight idea what this is. Is it similar to Places and finds gas stations, restaurants, etc? If so I don't need it because I prefer Places. Can it be deleted without messing up my phone?

You can't remove any of these apps unless you root the phone. Rooting is something that people do to get more control over their phone and it's settings. It should never be attempted by anyone who doesn't know what they are doing, because you can ruin the phone that way.

That said, I'm not sure what some of these apps are good for. But I can tell you that Poynt is an app that can help you find places to eat, go to movies, etc., in a town you are not familiar with. Twidroiyd is an app for Twitter. Where is exactly what you figured it was.

The apps you named are pre-installed, and can't be uninstalled without rooting (or so I learned). Some people may find some use for them, others probably not.

airG chat - A chat program for mobile users. Never used it.

Poynt - Not a bad idea. Has phone book-style features (look up people or businesses). Also local event guide.

WHERE - Similar to Poynt and Places. Also has local weather, news and traffic updates. Allows for user reviews of restaurants, etc. I use it occasionally.

SCVNGR - It's some kind of social location-based scavenger hunt game. Never played it, that seems to be the description given. Not that I'd ever use it during a time of $4/gallon gas. (tried to uninstall but couldn't)

Talk - Google's chat program

TTS Service - Text-to-speech. Reads text messages, etc. to user. (don't uninstall)

TalkBack - See above (don't uninstall)

Twidroyd - Client application for Twitter (tried to uninstall but couldn't, since I don't tweet). Twidroyd was recently (and briefly) blocked by Twitter:

Twitter suspends Twidroyd, UberTwitter and UberCurrent for violating app policies [Updated] | Technology | Los Angeles Times

Another one to add to the list is Latitude, which seems like Google's answer to services like Foursquare (and from what I hear is failing miserably). As a rule, however, I'm a bit wary of deleting any Google program from my Android, as I'm afraid of screwing up other programs. As I see it, as long as it's not annoying and doesn't take up a ridiculous amount of space, I just leave it alone, but disable if from auto-startup with Android Assistant.

Thank you for your response!!

So would you suggest NOT uninstalling these pre-installed apps for fear of messing up other needed programs as well as because they don't actually take up that much room??

My friend bought the HTC EVO recently and deleted a buuuunch of apps because they took up so much space and were unneeded. With this phone though, do they really cause the same problem?

More information on pre-installed apps is available here: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/307617-list-bloatware-lg-optimus-v.html

If you root the phone, uninstalling the pre-installed apps will remove their shortcuts from the main applications menu and remove their widgets from the widgets menu, so you would reduce menu clutter if you took them out. Not a bid deal, but I find the 7 widgets associated with Where, an application I'll probably never use, annoying.

In a reply to the post linked above, irha73 points out that even if you want to use the pre-installed apps on a rooted phone, it can be advantageous to remove them from the system partition, then re-install them using the android market, which puts them in the user partition, thus allowing you to move the apps to the SD card.
