Which network?

I'm totally new to Android. I've had an HTC Desire for just three days and so far am loving it.
One question I have is how do I know which data network the device is using? I.e., if I download a file can I tell if the device is using 3g or wireless? Same question if I'm navigating or doing anything else that involves data.
If Android can't show me, is there an app that can?

look in your notification bar at the top......... there will be a symbol for whichever method is active at the time

Thanks copestag. I'll try to keep an eye on the symbols. The trouble is that there seem to be so many, and remembering what each one means I find a bit tricky.
