Root Which ROM? Need HTC Sync ...

Newbie
Hi I am a newbie and need to update my unlocked HTC Desire from 2.3.3 mainly to gain more memory (and possibly battery power?). The problem is which ROM do I go for? Most important is it must be stable and easy to update. Am happy with the current user interface. I also use HTC Sync to sync contacts with Outlook, but am happy for any other method of doing this. Any help appreciated!

I recommend this one. However the link to the ROM .zip file is down so I will PM you a link to a copy in my dropbox. All the other links in the thread still work. If you want more app space you will need to partition you sd card with an ext3 partition & flash the Apps2sd mod from recovery after flashing the ROM. You don't need to flash the Radio as you will already have it if you are running the official htc 2.3 upgrade.

Thanks very much. This presumably will do it, but was vaguely hoping to get a more recent version at the same time (ICS / Jelly Bean). I am already running the official HTC 2.3 version. Or will I get into problems if trying to do that?

ICS/JB ROMs won't support HTC Sync (only HTC Sense ROMs will do that), and are mostly fairly experimental. There are a few - if you look in the Desire All Things Root Guide sticky post in this forum you'll find a link to a list of ROMs at xda-developers. I think you'll need to partition your card as if for a2sd before any of them will work.

The most stable ICS is probably Sandvold's, but there's been no development on it since September and I think there are one or two glitches. I've not been keeping up with JB, but have the impression that most are based on Evervolv source, so Nikez's ROM is probably the one to look at first.

It depends on whether you want bleeding edge and are prepared to tolerate a few bugs, or want something more stable.

Will be partitioning the card for sure as the main reason for doing this is to get more apps on the phone. I guess Ill just try one or two.

To ask a really stupid question, how do I know one of these ROMs wont just give someone else access to my phone, or start dumping my information where it shouldn't be? Or am I paranoid...

Know in absolute terms? You probably don't. But the developers tend to be hobbyists who you can talk to one the net, and many ROMs are open source.

Someone who wants to insert spyware would probably do better putting it in an app than a ROM though - much wider potential user base, not limited to users of one particular device.

Read the your chosen ROM thread at XDA from start to end. If it contains Malware users will be complaining.

Sounds good to me!
I am just in the process of re-partitioning the 4GB card that came with the phone using 4EXTRecoveryUpdater (will get a new faster one next week). All seems to be going well - I select Tools->partition sd card->remove all partitions and start from scratch, and then I select 512 for 1st partition, skip 2nd, skip "swap" whereupon it is meant to ask me to select Ext3 or Ext4 but it doesn't - it just wants to start formatting. What am I missing? The phone is S-OFF and rooted ...

First partition should be FAT32, Second EXT3 or EXT4 depending on ROM requirements (EXT3 should be fine for most if not all ROMs), Swap = 0. If it asks both partitions should be primary.
