Root which rom to use

hi there people. i have a rooted desire with s-off.

wondering though what is most stable rom to use?

an ICS one would be nice but would be happy with a gingerbread style one as long as it works and is stable

hate the fact that flash, facebook etc updates just cripple what internal memory the phone has.

I don't know how to measure "most stable" as I don't tolerate crashes or hangs at all.

I've been using dGB for the last year, so that's certainly stable. No a2sd though, so you want to use it with a custom hboot. If you prefer a2sd+ then I'd suggest Redux or Oxygen (or the MildWild modified version of that).

All of those are Gingerbread. If you want ICS then try Sandvold's ROM, but I don't have much experience with that.

thanks very much.

do you know if the ext4 recovery can be install if clockworkmod is already on the phone?

Yes it can, it will flash the recovery for you if you get the app from google play. (make a nandroid first to be safe) It can also restore clockwork mod backups.

On another note, i second what Hadron said for a rom redux, or dGb are excellent stable roms although they are not sense based. They are quite stripped down with emphasis on battery life, speed etc. never tried ics on desire so can't comment.

It's also worth noting that 4Ext recovery can restore nandroids that were made with CWM. Don't know whether it works the other way round (I suspect not), but it's a useful feature.

If you're considering Oxygen or Redux2 there are a couple of very nice themed versions available from XDA.

Nick's Phone Based On Oxygen 2.3.2 is an excellent ICS themed version. I used it for a couple of weeks recently with no reboots & only 1 minor bug that I could find. As with many of the AOSP ROMs there is a configurable settings widget in the status bar. When configuring the preselectable brightness levels I got force closes of settings.

Oxy ZM is much the same as Nick's phone but with GalleryICS & CameraICS and Redux2 ZM is a Redux equivalent. Both have an issue with the CameraICS in that you need to update the app from the play store forpanorama mode to work. For me though the deal breaker with these two was that CameraICS that's installed had intrusive ads. There is an ad block app included but it needs constant updates to block everything.

If you are happy with Plain green gingerbread Oxygen is excellent.

I'm currently flirting with MIUI XJ. Liking the change but I'll have to see how the battery lasts.

I had an HTC Desire (my wife has now commandeered it) It is currently running Mildwild V5 and is rock steady. Partitioned the SD card into 2 (Ext 4 partition after FAT 32 partition) and now it has loads of space for apps. Everything works. Very highly recommended.
