while on call...and screen goes black...power button ends call. WTF?

I was assuming it would bring back the home screen. When on a call and the screen goes black, nothing brings it back except hitting the power button and that ends the call. Phone is only three days old....whazza?
Also, planning on rooting so I can get in there and remove bloats and do some tweaks....is there a way to assign different alert sounds to different email accts?

try this--> SETTINGS-->CALL-->CALL ANSWERING/ENDING remove the check from The Power key ends calls

In my system (froyo, ViewSonic ViewPad) this option is under "settings--> accessibility--> power button ends call"

Screen goes black due to a light sensor that detects the phone being next to your ear in order to save battery life. If you move the device away from your face and wait a second it should come back. You can test this by putting your hand over the sensor located next to the front camera.
