Help White noise through headphones

ochenta

Well-Known Member
I've recently started using my Evo as a mp3 player on plane rides and just recently noticed a huge amount of white noise coming through. It's especially noticeable in quiet and music with frequent rests. I have this problem on Mobster's Rom, PACMAN, and even with the AC!D audio mod. Does anyone have any tips on reducing/eliminating this noise? Do others have this same problem?

Thanks.

I had the same problem with my phone 100% stock, i now have a custom rom but i have yet to listen to music so idk if its still there.

I actually think that this is the best sounding phone that I've ever owned, just because of that I purchased a 64 GB card and retired my standalone pmp. While my Cowen does sound better it's not enough for me to bother carrying a separate device just for music. I've also been using the Anthrax kernel since I bought the phone last June, makes a very noticeable improvement to the audio quality. :p

I actually tried Anthrax as well and am still getting a ton of noise, like a buzzing. I read a post on the Evo 3D forum that this is caused by the DAC in the phone. It sounds like there isn't a solution :( I might have to get a standalone mp3 player since it seriously bugs me.

This is the thread I've been looking for. It's been pretty annoying for me too, not as much with my Apple earphones but with the ones with extra bass. It's not worth bringing my ipod with me, but at least you're not alone.

So I realized my headphones have ridiculously low impedance (16 ohm), which apparently make them extremely prone to hiss. I just bought an impedance adapter which will add ~75 ohms off ebay, hopefully that will help. I've tried using my headphones in my old Optimus V, my desktop, my laptop, and my external DAC->PC and all produce a hissing noise...I'll update thread after trying the impedance adapter.

How about new headphones?

Meh, I just got these as a gift and they have great noise cancellation which is very nice for a frequent traveller such as myself. The hiss/white noise just annoys me when I want to listen to slower paced, more introspective music. If all else fails I might be saving up for new headphones, but I hope increasing the impedance will fix the problem.

Actually our phone has a Wolfson dac, which is definitely better than the usual Yamaha that's standard in the majority of phones today. For travel I use a pair of Pioneer SE-NC31C-K active noise cancellation earbuds, work very well on planes and trains. :D

I heard that the noise is actually the processor at work try plugging in your headphones and then touching the screen I think it makes the sound

Yeah, touching the screen makes the noise much worse. However, it's still noticeable even when the screen is turned off with music playing. If I don't have music playing with the screen off I don't hear the noise at all.

I think the root cause is my high sensitivity headphones. I tried to replicate the noise using some 64 ohm headphones and couldn't hear it.

My A900's even pick up the static. My Droid X never had any issues. Audio from it sounded great. This evo... not so much.

Dang, those are 40 ohms...my theory about impedance might be bunk. Nice headphones btw, my main cans are HD580s. The ones I'm trying to use on the go are etymotic HF5's.

I guess that I'm fortunate, even on the odd occasion when I use my Fiio E6 headphone amp I still don't experience this hiss that sounds like it might be caused by improperly installed shielding or ground path.

I noticed that I have the same problem, but with Surround sound headphones with 12 ohms(i think). I hear alot of popping. Its so annoying. I have not found a fix. It is even worse when I am playing movies.

Quick update for anyone who's interested. Today I received my 75 ohm impedance "adapter". It is definitely functional, in that it decreases the volume so I have to have my phone volume set to ~75%, but it does absolutely nothing to reduce the level of white noise.

Since that didn't work I've decided to buy a cheap dedicated mp3 player instead of using my phone.
