Whitehouse petition to change cell unlock laws tops 100k signatures...

Making it illegal to un-lock our cell phones is just another step towards that Jerks Socialistic Agenda to take our God given RIGHTS away... Yes, rights not privileges...

Ibrahim 17:12 And God thoust grant the right for one to modify the software of any cellular device, to all who believe in His divine right.

God given RIGHTS

That phrase always cracks me up. Our rights were given to us by our founding fathers, not a deity. Come to think of it, with any religion do you really have freedom? The list of things you can't do; worship one deity or burn forever; obey the one deity and only the one deity or be punished or killed. You can't say we have free will and then use threats to influence our decisions one way or another.

Anywho, back on topic. Unlocking my phone was a priority just to get rid of the bloatware that came with it and install some apps that need root access. How is that any different that buying a computer that comes pre-loaded will all sorts of crapware and removing those programs? As far as I know, it wasn't illegal for me to remove any of the pre-loaded software from my computer. Hell, I could reformat it and install any OS that I want to. Why are cell phones being treated differently?

first the founding fathers gave you nothing....... they simply wrote down what you already had...... whether you believe in a supreme being or not

second.... youre confused about this discussion.......... it is perfecly legal for you to ROOT your phone........ this discussion is about unlocking your phone..... meaning you would be able to use a US Cellular phone on AT&T or a Verizon phone on Cricket

Actually, quite the reverse. You're being stopped from unlocking your because of CAPITALISM: this is all about property rights.

Until the phone is out of contract, it doesn't actually belong to you: I'm pretty sure that you have never had the right to change something that didn't belong to you without the owner's permission.

To have that sort of right, you would need some kind of exteme communist regime where there are no property rights :D

.. which I guess makes you a .. RED!

I'm curious, is it harder for the Government to tap an unlocked cell phone? Or a rooted one? Bill

Not really relevant, given they're tapping at the exchange not on the phone.

Come to think of it, with any religion do you really have freedom?

Quite the reverse: organised religion is all about controlling people.

One thing Marx was right about.

.. basically, because you own the computer but a locked phone does not belong to you until you have completed the contract.

The lock on the phone is to ensure that you use it only on the network that owns it. Which seems fair enough ..

The bloat is on there because the owner - the network - wants it there. Which also seems fair, however copestag says you are actually still able to root, so long as you don't unlock.

Which kinda makes it more than fair ..

Well, the rights you had while you were still graced with British rule ;) - after that, strictly speaking, it was all up for grabs :D
