Who has their phones in view the most in public places? Men or women

Who has their phones in view the most at the Mall, Target, Fred Meryers? Men or women? By that I mean who has their phone in their hands or back pockets or actually texting and talking the most? Men or women. To find out, I went along with my wife shopping at the Mall, Target, Fred Meryers yesterday, about an hour at each place. While she shopped, I sat in the food courts and watched at each place for about an hour at each place.

Didn't see one man or woman over age 40 with a phone.

At all three places I saw ONE guy in his 20's with with a phone.

At all three places I saw at least 3/4 of the women between 18-35 with their phone in view. I counted 12 of the women in all three places with their phones in their back pockets.

So it is the Women who are addicted to their phones.

Definitely men, usually placing them on the table in restaurants, alongside the cigarettes and lighters. Depending on where you are, I would be careful about showing phone in a really public place because of the risk of theft. Small city in China, I think I'm OK.

Hey Mike!

Must be different here across the big pond in the NW as I was in 3 different food courts and didn't see one man doing that, except me, I had mine out waiting for a text from my wife for when she was done shopping. She had hers in her purse when she is shopping. Also at 32 a bit more mature.

My sister-in-law who lives with us, (a spoiled brat) is 25 and can't be without her phone... goes to the bathroom with it, does house hold chores such as vacuuming and has it in her back pocket... checks her phone at least every minute, yardwork, washing the dishes... same thing. I thought it was just her, but I'm seeing that in public places.

Jack, yeh it is quite different. I know food courts in the UK, because they're usually very open and public, it is generally bad idea to let a phone out of your hands and leave it on a table, best kept in the pocket or bag unless actually using it. In case someone walking by swipes it. I rarely eat at mall food courts in China. When we're dining in restaurants, we're usually in an enclosed booth or sometimes a private room. But at places like airports, bus and train stations, places where people are waiting, will see a lot of phones being used, social networking, playing games, reading e-books, watching videos, etc. In the school canteen I'll often have my phone out, because I'll be reading BBC news, lesson plans and ideas, Android Forums, etc.

Facebook I bet.

I don't think the OP was stereotyping women per se - he is stereotyping fashion!
The younger girls tend to wear crop type tops and tight jeans, don't carry bags - so the phone is rather apparent. No place else to put it. An Iphone case can have a lot of bling, so it's also a fashion statement. The clip on cases are not very attractive. If the fashion changed to very loose-fitting pants and sloppy tops, you wouldn't see the phone. A lot of the guys still sag, and I don't know how comfortable that would be with a phone bopping your leg in the back every time you move. Plus shorts seem to be oversized besides sagging almost to the ankles.

Unless you sew, or really want to pay for more staid clothes, there isn't too much of a choice.

If you look in car windows while driving, it's 50-50.

I don't think you can really get an accurate number when it comes to this topic. In the end, it depends on the type of person and what their needs are, regardless of gender.

well.. this how I think it is..

women have purses. so if not in use.. it would be in the purse.
but men have only their pockets.. and sometimes the phone is too big for them.
I (as a man) have a NOTE3

men hate to have their hands full..
women don't seem to mind holding things in their hands..

my guess.. is that it would be women who have their phones out more..
because they do more communicating. and want the phones more accessible.
it sometimes more difficult to fish for the phone in a big purse.
I can get my phone out of my pocket pretty quick (only thing in that pocket).

I keep my big phone in my pocket.. but when I sit down, I have to take it out.

When I commented to my wife who is 32, about women putting their phone in their rear pockets, she said this:

"That is stupid... fashionable or convenient, I'm libel to eventually sit on it, or it will fall out or someone will steal it, besides I don't like men looking at my butt!"

Now her sister, who is 25, the one I mentioned in a post above and does just that, phone in rear pocket sometimes, just rolled her eyes when she heard that from my wife.

From what I saw at the three places where I sat in the food courts, it was pretty obvious that women between 18-30 were the ones with the visible phones. Same age group in men, just the one. I think dan hit the nail on the head about the men.

And Revenant Ghost, I think my little stake out will be pretty close in most cases around the NW. Might be different elsewhere, but I think pretty similar.

here in the USA.. in big city Dallas Texas.

I have no problem yet.. putting my phone on the table in public view.
I never leave unattended...

if someone is willing to try to snatch it off the table our out of my hands...
it would be interesting... chase

...and for the women wearing their phones sticking halfway out of their rear pants are asking for trouble... most men can outrun women... it would be EASY to snatch that phone and run. I heard one time where this woman found her phone missing from her rear pants while in a crowded mall. She recalls a guy bumped into her real hard almost making her lose her balance. He was all apologetic and left. More than likely it was twos working together, one bumps, the other grabs at the same time. Common theft for wallets too.

That's how they usually work, distraction. I'm sure every town and city has more than their fair share of pickpockets and distraction-thieves. I recall something last year in Bristol, UK, me and a friend were sat in a pub at a table. Two young people came up to us asking if we had any cigarettes, of course we hadn't as neither of us smokes. If a phone or other valuable item was on the table, one person does the talking and distracting, other grabs the phone and is gone before we even realise. Myself, I just wouldn't feel comfortable doing something like that in a food court, or anywhere that's completely open to the public.

An enclosed booth or a private room in a restaurant in China is different, because the only people who should be coming by the table are people you know and the waiters/waitresses. Thing is this is not just to eat, it's often a real social event, maybe to do business, chat or just get out of the house for a few hours.

Car keys is another favourite item that tends to be stolen, really because it's extremely difficult to start a car without the keys these days because of immobilisers. Sometimes these peeps might even be following you, or be working in gangs. Something happened in Hong Kong, a young lady came up to me, started talking, she already knew which hotel I was staying at and sounded very friendly, and asked if I wanted to go for a beer as I was alone. It's a common trick.

I went to the big Tacoma Mall for lunch today and watched people again. At the Mall, it is mostly younger folks. This time about half the women had their phone visible, yakking, holding it or in rear pocket. Saw two men this time with phones out, one talking the other just carrying it. Someone made the comment the reason women put in it back pocket or carry it was because of no purse. Not so, saw several with big fashion purses with phone in hand.

The above didn't count people in food court eating. About 3/4 women with phone out texting or whatever. Saw one guy doing it.

I still say women are by far, worse phone addicts than men. And I thought I was addicted. Why else would I be on this forum. :)
