Who has Verizon tethered plan for Droid?

Early this year I picked up a VZW mobile wifi hot spot card for my work computer (field service mechanic = working at the corner of "No" and "Where") so I could receive and send emails, pics and service manuals (pdf), and have net access at hotels that have none.

Speed is adequate for my needs, and I have yet to break the 1Gb mark).

Now I find out that VZW has tethering plans for my 1st gen Droid.

Who has gone that route (VWZ tethering plan on Droid) and what speeds are you getting?

If the Droid is as fast as the mobile hot spot card, then I will cancel the contract at the end of the year, and go with the tethering plan (and get work to pay part of my personal phone bill :D )

Please link the speed test server you are using. I typically use Speed Test - dslreports.com

Just tested my phone and got 1356Kb/s down and 578Kb/s up Denver to LA.

Don't want to root my phone or risk violation of contract (getting caught not playing by the rules).
 
I would imagine the speed being about the same. The real bottle neck to tethering is the network itself and the technology used, not so much the device itself.

But I heard Verizon disabled official tethering on the Droid 1?

Yeah, I noticed that it was not on the list. You can tether the old borderline "Dumb Phones" like the Razr, but not the Droid. WTH???. Droid X is a hotspot modem, not sure about the Droid 2. Going to have to make some calls unless someone can confirm Yea or Nae before I do.
 
There were concerns about hardware issues for the wireless tether for the original droid. However, they stated that usb tethering was never offered on the droid, and they weren't going to add it.

However, they weren't going to block it on newer phones. Both the Droid 2 and the Droid X are going to have both wireless and usb tethering.

The only way you can is through rooting then with your current phone. Our phones are more than capable of it, its just Verizon wanting more $$$. I personally unofficially tether, but whether or not you want to, is up to you.
 
I downloaded the Easy Tether Lite and seems to work fine, even on HTTPS sites. More concerned about the mystery bill now with "unauthorized usage of phone". Going by a VZ store sometime this weekend to hopefully find a person with a brain, not looking for a commission.
 
I've been tethering unofficially for a few months now and have gone over the 5gig limit they say they have and have no had any mysterious charges. Since its my main internet source. Let's just hope the bill stays the way it is.
 
I also have a rooted Droid 1 (had... dead at the moment:() and use wifi tether occasionally.

However, if you're going to use it on a regular basis and for work, i would keep a few things in mind.

First, it's a MAJOR battery drainer. So plan on having your D1 plugged in.
Also, my Droid gets very hot while tethering. I personally wouldn't want to have it on for more that 15 minutes or so. I don't know if others have left it on longer. I would be worried about it overheating.

This happens with my ally every now and then (usually in an hot room). What i would do it take the back cover off and lay it screen down (i have no scratches either and I've read the ally has gorilla glass so that might be why.) That would help keep the phone form overheating and restarting.
