Who here owns a Windows Phone? how are they?

What I saw was in the UK, before I moved to China. In the early days of the Walkman PMPs, they were awful. Very proprietary. Once they dumped ATRAC and their dreadful Sonic Stage software, they were actually good IMO. Creative Labs were quite common as well here. iPod was also very popular as well of course. I still got an 80GB HDD iPod that I use sometimes, although it's not using the Apple software, I got Rockbox on it.

These days though comparatively few people use PMPs, we're all using our smartphones now. :D

How long was the Zune out for? - two years was it? But as I said, I never actually saw one, just read about it. Windows Phone in the PRC is quite a rare item so far, or so it seems, and not being marketed very well. The local Unicom dealer has a few non-functioning dummies on display, This is in amonst many functioning demonstration Androids that customers can play with and try out. There's real iPhones as well. Chinese manufacturers(except for Huawei) don't seem to do any Windows Phone handsets so far, they're almost 100% Android now.
 
Aren't Windows Phones priced somewhere close to the iPhone? i do know their tablets make the iPad look cheap ($699 for a 10" RT tablet? you're kidding, right Microsoft?!)

I believe they are actually quite close to iPhone pricing, especially where I am because there's no carrier subsidy available. Which I think is a bit of a problem because Nokia, Windows and Microsoft havn't really been associated with luxury products before. Nokia was a byword for cheap candy-bar phone for such a long time, and were always very popular. But now it's all about the low-cost Android phone for most people.

Sigh, if only Nokia would make an Android (yeah, I know, never going to happen) with a better screen (no restrictions from Windows) and the same build as a Lumia, I'd strongly consider it. :o
The camera on the 1020, while not insanely awesome, is pretty damn good.

I think it was lack of apps that hurt it the most. Sturdy little suckers though
 
I think windows phones lack the pizzazz that consumers want. That's always been they're downfall..

And when they finally divert from the old they take 5 steps back and everyone hates it.

Where's the innovation in it all?
 
I personally use the "Just say no" approach to a Windows phone. I certainly do not care for the locked down OS, and enjoy the ability to change things to the way I like it, and I also won't be putting Windows 8 on my laptop either.

My friend's Zune survived getting squished by a large crate that was being unloaded from a carrier. It got a small scratch on the face, but other than that, it continued to operate as normal.

What I hate about it, and almost any phone, is that it is trying to be your Music Player, Browser, Facebook, almost anything you can imagine.

Am I the only one here who prefers to listen to Music Files/Radio on a Media Player, and NOT on my Smartphone?!

That is what scares me, and the fact that Mozilla is also entering the mobile scene, competition is going to get very brutal.
 
I don't own one, but I've played with one. Thought it was quite nice actually: the UI is very fluid and seemed (on a relatively brief time with it) to be rather coherent and consistent, as well as being genuinely different. Less sure that it's me - didn't have the chance to see what if I could do to make it my own - but I'm sure it's something I could use, and the Nokia hardware was very solidly constructed (it was a 920 I tried out).

I'm not switching, but I was more impressed by it than I expected.
 
i owned one for 15 minutes, then left it on the table. too locked down (more than iOS even, no background wallpaper option), too limited (yes, i'm one of those guys who would rather have one gadget-for-all than have one for each purpose thus carrying around too many devices at once and WP lacks apps and games)

No browser other than Internet Explorer. i'm sure i'm not alone in my hate of IE. haven't used it since my 'retro tech phase' when i was, for a few moments in 2009-10, using Windows 98SE and IE 6.

Even if you're one of those guys who loves having an MP3 player, phone, camera in each pocket separately, MS failed on all of that as well. the Zune flopped, their previous incarnation, Windows Mobile, also flopped. Camera? that's the Nokia Lumia series right now. no one, i repeat, no one would buy a smartphone and only use the camera!!!! no one is going to trade the benefits of Android as well as iOS, for a copy of BlackBerry and give all of that up over a camera.

Not sure i would adopt any tech from a brand that i see on life support. Microsoft's time has come and gone already. let them die in peace
 
I know one of my co-workers in his early-mid 50's who has one. I've never used one personally though. But after what's been said about Windows phones here and what I've seen, I'll stick with Android as it meets all of my needs.
