If you turn on Touch Sensitivity, you can use the screen with gloves on. But that's not all...
Once you activate Touch Sensitivity, you can use a pencil or pen to control the screen. Not just activating apps and navigating, but also drawing. Drawing so accurately you'd swear there was an active digitizer.
It is very unlikely that a pen would scratch the screen, but it would be impossible to do so with a pencil.
I've tried other pointy things, but it appears the stylus has to have a metal or graphite tip.
