I contacted Samsung Customer Support by phone to ask what type of glass is used in their Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, normal glass came back the reply, however according to Corning Glass their Gorilla Glass is used in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. See [url=http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/news/press-releases/samsung

Thanks for that. Do you know when Samsung started using Gorilla Glass in their 10.1 Tabs? I ask because if the screen is Gorilla Glass then there isn't much point is putting a [Zagg] shield on it to protect it from scratches.

I'm not sure, I just remember Corning threw a hissy fit when another device claimed to be using Gorilla Glass and they weren't, so they wouldn't claim it is in a device if it wasn't.

The plot thickens!!!

Just in case the CS agent I got through to wasn't aware of the situation I emailed as well and here is their reply:-

"Thank you for contacting Samsung.

In regards to your email, the glass on the Galaxy 10.1 Tab is not gorilla glass. It is our own composite protective glass face. We hope this information is useful.

If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

Kind regards,

I have never had a screen protector on mine and do not have any scratches. I doubt it would like that without Gorilla Glass or whatever enhanced glass they used. It has been advertised since the very beginning as Gorilla Glass.

When it comes to CS, I never trust them - they are not some tablet or phone experts, just people who needed a job and got the CS one. Before this job, maybe they did not even know what a tablet was.

Well, my wife dropped ours from about 3 feet to our wood flooring and it completely shattered the screen. Yes, I know anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much, but it's the first device that this has happened to and our Droids went through hell for two years without a scratch. This was after about 2 months of ownership. I'd say just be careful and you'll be okay (I hate screen protectors and will never use one).

Gorilla Glassdoes not protect from shattering, only from scratches.

Gorilla Glass is SCRATCH resistant, not break resistant. Screen protectors won't prevent breakage either. I hope she puts a case on her new one. It will add some protection.
