Root Why bother rooting?

Hi all,

New owner of an N7. I've been using the device for 2 days now and I love it!

My question is: I 'root' all my android devices in the past because there was a need too. For example, enable WifI tether, new ROM etc. However, I don't see any need to do so on the N7. Isn't the N7 one of the 'first in line' devices for any update? So in other words - why bother rooting?

Thanks all.

I do it mainly for custom ROMs and some enhanced backup and USB support. Otherwise, its not really necessary.

Some worthwhile apps need root - Titanium Backup, for example - while others work more effectively on a rooted device, like ABP say.

In addition it allows the ability to run scripts to do routine tasks that are hard to achieve at a higher level, so in my case I can back up only new or changed files to a NAS on my home network using rsync, just as I do for any other network device no matter what OS it happens to run.

I don't use custom ROMs but I need root access - and I'm pleased that Google had the vision to see the need and make it so easy and painless to achieve on the Nexus 7.

Thanks guys.

I guess Titanium Backup would be nice to have. Its saved me many times on my EVO but then again Im constantly messing around with ROMS etc on the EVO.

So if I decided to root, would the 4.2.2 update still be automatically installed from Google (would root stay intact?) or do I have to start playing around with ROMS if rooted?

Thanks for your patience.

From what I've read, once you get the update you will lose root, but it is possible to easily re root using wugs toolkit with no lose of data!

I also believe there are other ways to do it, check out one of the other threads in root section, but I could talk through it!

Had my Optimus-V rooted because I wanted custom system fonts and Titanium. With my Nexus 7, I've found no need. Most things I'd be pissed if I lost are in the cloud. Its' fast enough for me and I can customize it however I like with ssLauncher.

Nandroid backups and root-only apps are reason enough for me.

Thanks guys.

If you stay on the stock ROM, you can still take OTAs. Worst case scenario is you lose root, but thats easily redone in less than 5 minutes with the nexus toolkit

Indeed. The ability to make nandroids, and use root-only apps such as titanium backup, and adfree are amazing. Custom roms and kernels are just gravy at that point.

cause it's addicting ..
oh and alot
of apps need root access ;)
I did root and thats about it .. I never tweaked it never removed anything ..
a few apps require root..

but the things is way fast..

let alone I change it ever 4 to 5 days LOL..

Depends ;-)

Make sure you have the stock recovery (and ROM) installed before the update and use a free app like voodoo to protect the root binary before taking the update and use it to restore root afterwards. Dead simple, works perfectly.

If you used the Nexus Root Toolkit to root the Nexus 7 be aware it will not work after the update until it is itself updated due to changes in adb. There's a temporary fix on the WugFresh website that can be used in the meantime. If using some other system make sure the adb you use is version 1.0.31 or it won't connect to the Nexus 7 with 4.2.2.

That's about it really :-)
