Why cant Google with all its programming power make some QUALITY apps for us????

The calendar and contacts are far, far behind Blackberry for one. Then compare them to things like Pocket Informant for my old Palm and see what can be done with calendar apps. PIM functions are, for me, the most important thing in a smartphone and Google are of a size where they could have got these right.
Standard arguments (a) third party alternatives will provide greater features and (b) it's early days for Android. I just believe that Google could do with developing things like this before things like animated wallpapers (which I have tried once on my Desire, turned off and will never turn on again).

Why don't YOU make some quality apps..
Great part about android is it is open source.
Open source means anyone can program for it.... The original intent wasn't for google to make all the great apps, it was for people to have the capability to make apps them self :/

I am sorry if I'm being harsh here.. But, honestly the platform is still relatively new.. google/developers are gunna come out with great things.. but, only in the last 6 months have I really found out about android and the user base is getting there but, it has a way to go..
As users increase.. so do developers and quality apps.

Then again PIM is a fundamental use for a large number of smartphone users, it should have been functional back in 1.5, seamless in 2.1. Its not, it could best be described as woefully inadequate.
The why dont you make the apps argument is nothing but a poor excuse for what should have been there in alpha. When a brain surgeon fails to properly do what every other brain surgeon is already doing he gets his ass handed to him. There would not a bunch of fanboys of craptacular brain surgeons saying people should just do the jobs themselves if they dont like the butch job Dr Death did. You could say the same thing about any goods or service, principle is the same. I like android but its got a few serious flaws and lame fanboy excuses dont change that fact. PIM is basic functionality on a smartphone. It being essentially missing is like not having windshield wipers on a new car, they should be there. You shouldn't have to build them yourself.

I agree. For example, I can't see how Google can put out a calendar where you can't pick how long you want to snooze the reminder for....

Google already makes many great apps for your phone. Let's see there is Google Maps (w/ Nav), Listen, Google Translate, Places Directory, Google Sky Map, Google Translate, Google Googles, Google Voice, Buzz, My Tracks, My Maps Editor, Google Shopper, Scoreboard, Gesture Search, and Orkut.
Products by Google that can be used on the phone through third party apps or the browser Google Docs, Google Reader, Google News, Panaramio, Google Checkout, Google Wave, Google Groups, Picasa (which works with your gallery), and Google Tasks.
And then there are several other product that Google has like google book search, Google Labs, and several others that if I was to google google I would see but can't think of right now. As well as developing programs for Apple and Symbian and developing and upgading Android. Which they are managing 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1 as well as developing 2.2 and 3.0. They have enough to do. Check out some of the apps above. Most are realy good. And most intigrate into each other like in your Picasa your Gmail contacts are used for emailing photos, or how you can post to Buzz a video from YouTube (not to mention non Google products like Facebook and Twitter). Now tell me how Google needs to make good apps. And they are still aquring other companies like the one they did last week which is a game developing company so they can make better games for Android.

Couldn't agree more with the lack of functional calendars and basic PIM functionality. Everytime someone posts about it, all the Google Fanboys start foaming at the mouth and seem to take some personal offense to it... I never understand that.
That fact is, these basic functions are extremely poor on the android platform and have made NO progress what so ever in regards to a better calendar. Everytime someone posts about it, all we get is someone trying to tell us how great the Google one is.
It should be this basic. A business associate or friend sends me a calendar invite to my email (NOT GMAIL) address. I accept the invite, and it populates my calendar on my phone. Android can't do it. Most people DO NOT use Gmail for there business email, and most small business do not run an enterprise server. So the calendar functionality is essentially useless to me, and I would guess many others.
Now I do agree that Android makes a TON of great programs that can let your phone do almost anything you could imagine. In fact, I like my phone so much, that even though the calendar is useless to me, I can't convince myself to go back to a blackberry.
That being said. FIX THE DEADBEAT CALENDAR!

tarheel, buy a 3rd party exchange integration app, and sync it from outlook on PC.

In fairness as already noted they have come up with some great applications. Still the lack of PIM and outlook support, both local and exchange is a major failing and makes the phone untenable for many business users. For those that are not aware we are talking about millions of people, not a few whiners on a forum.

That's somewhat true, except it seems Google doesn't even fully support their own system. Google Bookmarks aren't integrated into the browser, Google Calendar on the web has features missing in the Android app, there's no Tasks API, etc etc etc. At the very least, I'd expect Android apps should be just as capable as their Google web app counterparts.

People, the only reason companies like RIM still exist is because of its use in the business world. You're asking for a new OS with TONS of more capabilities to essentially replace a phone whose sole existence is focused on a few features.
More will come with a matter of time, but it's a bit premature to criticize Android for its lack of [enter feature here].

By that reasoning, some company could introduce a new car that happens to not have a steering wheel or windows, and someone could answer, "More features will come in time."
Phones introduced in the market today have to compete with already extant phones by default. That's the world we're living in.

Since they decided to include calendar and exchange support on all of their phones. Poorly implemented, but they obviously intended for it to have the ability to be a business tool.
The funny thing is, we aren't asking anyone to reinvent the wheel. I just figured if your going to build a smartphone from scratch, you would at least cover the basics.
Instead, Google and its developers are too focused on the "wow" factor, and creating apps that will track how often and what time your dog takes a dump. Nice....

no.. but, while we are on the subject of doctors.. there are many different kinds, and believe it or not, some of us believe kevorkian was acting morally to some degree. :/ My point remains the same, never have I seen google tout any of these phones as "business phones".
I am going to addresss the windshield and wipers comment when I address another post in a second.. but, as another user said "welcome to open source." I have said this in another post, I will say this again. Early adopters always suffer ups and downs. Look at the xbox 360 early adopts. RROD was pretty harsh.
Ok back to the car comparison which I avoided last post. When you buy a car it does come with standard features. Wheels, steering wheel, ect. It doesn't always come with certain luxury features. Whether you believe it or not, high end race cars actually don't come with several "standard" features. Your phone can make calls, it can send text, and it functions as a basic phone.
We can argue over PIM all day long but, at the moment, your comparing it to blackberry which has been around for years. I have never seen blackberry as a media consumption device like the iphone, It is really more of a business tool than anything else, so naturally it will do it better than anyone else.
Here is my point, you are arguing the various things *YOU* Want in a phone as "necessity" when the reality is, if your going to compare these phones to doctors or cars.. You have to give fair comparisons.
you can't compare a sports car to a truck someone bought for towing a boat, and that shouldn't be compared to a jeep someone bought for driving off road through the woods.
All of those are arguable luxury vehicles with very different purposes. (I mean luxury in a sense that they are not necessary not luxury in the sense that they would be classified as that at a dealership)

I think what you all consider "frothing at the mouth" fanboys, are probably... in fact people who acknowledge that android isn't for every single person out there.
I hate iphone. One reason why is because, people who want it get other phones an expect those phones to be just as good.. Conversely, I hate it because, no matter *what* you want to do people claim it is the best for *EVERYTHING* which is a lie.
I would be a hypocrite if I were to say android was "the best" for "everyone".
Then why wasn't iphone release with bluetooth file transfer

The original user never said anything about PIM. The original user was (as far as any of us can tell by what is written) Complaining google hasn't created more or better applications, in which case.. I say yet again "welcome to open source, home of the do it yourself".
Make a thread about PIM and your problems with it and I will agree or disagree based on your points about PIM. However, for this thread, we don't know if the original poster is a 5th grader mad there aren't more games on his backflip, or a power using business owner who is annoyed by his newly purchased nexus one.
PIM was brought up by other users afterwards.
Agree - the "it'll come in time" argument really annoys me as any forward looking company looking to make the best phone OS out there (and surely that is what Google are looking to do) would look at the BEST features of the BEST current devices and make sure they are all included. Or am I being daft?
