WHY? crop pics for contacts

KNOWONE

Why do i have to crop a pic or photo for a contact - is there a way to turn off this function in settings -- in MOST cases you need the ENTIRE picture for the contact & because the crop feature automatically pops up it makes in imposssible to get the whole picture - -I hate this notion - as being a former iphone user, I did love the ability to just select a picture & be done with it for a contact, for whatever stupid ass reason android just wont let me do the same & stop with the hassles of extra steps -- if, there is a way to bypass this please let me know -- if NOT then perhaps an ANDROID team member will read this & perhaps incorporate the ability in a future update to be able to just select entire picture when the damn crop pops up - the abilty to crop is great BUT, I want to only do that WHEN I want to NOT automatically!!

I would gladly answer your question, IF you provided enough details for me to answer.

What phone? What carrier? What android version? Are you rooted?

Contact pics have to be square, most photos aren't square. Does the iPhone use rectangular pics for contacts then?

Wow. Calm down, breathe. You seem unreasonably angry about a very small issue. Like, out of control, ready to murder someone. My contacts all look great, all showing as much as I want them to show, and it honestly comforts me to see a nice neat contact list, all pics the same shape. Good luck, and please work on those anger issues.

It may be a small issue, but even 5 year old dumb Nokias had full screen caller ID (I get a brilliant full screen picture of who is calling me on my 5800) as compared to a tiny one on a large screen and if stretched to full screen will be absurdly pixelated. Different default numbers for calls and text are also standard on many dumb phones, but surprisingly absent on android.

I am going to shift to Android (overall it does seem the better OS), but I see no reason why these basic features are not implemented OOB in 1.5/1.6, let alone 2.2/2.3 more than 2 years down the line.

Adjust the crop box to include as much of the photo as you want.

If a photo doesn't have the same ratio of dimensions then cropping or stretching/squashing has to take place. It's fairly straightforward.

Apples and oranges. Contact photo size and cropping are 2 different things.

Then how do I get a full screen call ID on an android? The one app that is there has terrible reviews.

Yes, I can avoid the cropping and put in a larger pic. But then since the caller ID image is small, one needs a bigger facial image, so cropping does become necessary. Then when does crop the image, if somebody is able to manage FS CID, that image will become terribly pixelated. To avoid it, one has to again assign new pics to the contact.

Is the pic already in the PC? Open your PC browser, sign in to GMail, open your Contacts, copy and paste and edit your contacts picture right there. The picture will sync to your phone.

I never bother with this. Why? Because my contacts pictures are the ones they themselves choose, and added into their GMail, Yahoo, Twitter, or Facebook accounts, which are sync'ed into the phone as their main contact picture. I don't have to take pictures of each of my friends and relatives, then attach those pics into the phone contacts. If you're doing this, you're not doing modern smartphone right.

I know for a fact my younger sister constantly changes her Facebook picture all the time because those changes always sync right into my Android contacts book entry of her. I see an old classmate change his contact picture from a cartoon to him and his daughter. I see my bro's picture one day that of the tail end of his car and the next week, that of his son. That's because my Android contact pics = same = sync with their Facebook, Yahoo, Google and Twitter accounts.

You are quite right and I am aware of this, in fact it is the way it should be.

The problem lies with contacts who are not on any of these sites (oldies like me) and/or who have not even bothered to add their pics to their Gmail (many other oldies like me). So the only option is to add it manually.

As I said, cropping is not an issue for me - a minor nuisance - I can select the whole picture in Gmail-contacts. But then the face is too tiny on the android as it does not have the full screen caller id. As and when somebody does make a decent app for it (I would pay for it), then I have to again 'de-crop' my contact pictures again.

I am not really sure why you need to see your contacts in full screen.

Like i said, its easy to just add the pictures to your contacts on the PC. You might just want to add a higher resolution image file into the GMail contact portrait. The pics are synced automatically to the Android.

The large majority of people I know in GMail, and not just GMail, but Yahoo, Twitter and Facebook, all have picture avatars and it is easy just to sync that.

Because they look really nice full screen instead of smaller than a postage stamp on android? And android seems to be all about customisation and choice?

Yes, I do intend to sync the full res. pic to my gmail contacts - for the future at least - hopefully they will realise a nice feature since ages on Nokias is missing - and add it or a decent app may get developed.
