Why did Verizon stop offering one year contracts?

Is this only for online? Can I go to the store and get one year? Two years to long to wait for a new phone.

Phones are pretty expensive nowadays. If they were to offer 1 year contracts, I can imagine offering them at an affordable monthly cost would mean they wouldn't make any money.

It's the same with a lot of carriers over here too, you're even starting to struggle to get reasonably priced 18 month contracts.

Moved to the Verizon forums.

I think it was a money play by VZW if they can get you locked into a 2 year contract they know they will make more money in the long run.

The same reason they stopped offering unlimited data and allowing you to use 3rd party tether apps on their network, Greed

As every one else stated, MONEY.

Yeah, I bought my Droid X on a one year contract when it launched. I didn't mind paying the extra $70 to $90 for the option. Of course I'm coming up on a year and a half now, so the point was kinda moot.

I hated hearing that Verizon dropped the one year contract when they did. At least it's better than Canada, where my daughter lives. Most of the carriers there require a 3 year contract for subsidised phones. Yikes!

Gordon Gecko said "Greed is good." (Quote from the movie "Wall Street") ;)

If I owned a business, I'd want to maximize profits also. :)

Remember, Verizon doesn't get any money from thier customers unless they (The customer) agrees to give it to them.

Best of luck to all of us....

I never saw the movie, but if I am not mistaken, Gordon Gecko was at the top of the pyramid. The view is different down here.;)

Yeah, hard to argue with that. When you're on the bottom rung of the ladder and look up, all you see are a$$'s. :D

But I did have my own business for about 20+ years, and I was always looking for ways to raise my prices without loosing business. i.e. I wanted to send my daughter to private school, buy a nicer home, go on vacations to exotic places, etc. And making more money allowed me to do that.

It may be getting harder to do every day, but I would like to think it is still at least possible to run a profitable business without screwing your customers and workforce. The problem with greed is that it knows no bounds. With greed, even if you are at the top you still are looking for more.

As a customer with choices, the only way a business can take advantage of you is if you allow them to. A company can be as "greedy" as they want, but you ultimately control your money and when and where you spend it.

"Well said!" he replied, as he looked down at his Android devices. :)

I hear ya. Got my Droid X on launch day. My wife and daughter got the iPhones the same month Verizon started selling them. (Last Feb. I think) They switched from AT&T.

I'm elegible for an upgrade in March, but I think it'll be after that that I get a new phone. So far my "X" has been the best phone I've ever had. I want to wait for the 2nd generation LTE radios. I'll be looking for those phones in the 2nd or 3rd qtr of this year.

Maybe something will be announced at the Mobile World Congress next month.

Best of luck to us,
